I think that MREs are actually fun, so I ordered the Black Heed LLC - BH-500 Vegan Fried Rice to try. It has a shelf life of 10 years, but I was pretty sure I was going to eat it quickly. The canister was actually difficult to open. It's a larger can with a pop top lid, so I expected to have no difficulty in removing it. However, I pulled the pop top as instructed and the lid got stuck several times as I was opening it; it wasn't a dealbreaker, but it was perplexing. The Vegan Fried Rice itself was sealed in a vacuum-sterilized aluminum foil packet inside the can, and the can is filled with nitrogen. The directions advised to add 250ml (1 cup/8 fl oz) of boiling water to the can (containing the fried rice) and stir occasionally. There are alternate directions provided if you do not have boiling water. I added boiling water and stirred occasionally. After 10 minutes, I checked it. The rice was dense and most of the vegetables were hydrated; the peas were the notable exception, and I did not like the texture as they did not seem to hydrate properly. There was not much flavor, so I added some seasoning from my home. For a camping or emergency product, this MRE is tasty. There is definitely a lack of vegan-friendly camping food, and this helps to fill that gap. It was also sufficient for one person for a light lunch, although I find myself fairly hungry afterward. It will absolutely benefit from some seasoning, even a to-go packet of soy sauce. The can itself is large and may not pack easily in a backpack. It also a pricier option at almost $9 for 490 calories/1 serving.

2812510 year shelf life!BH-500 Emergency Food/Survival food/MRE/Camping & hiking food (Vegan Tomato Pasta)Brand: BLACK HEED LLC$8.50 Asin B0DNWQXQF8Obviously I cannot test the shelf life but I’m happy to see vegan options offered for MREs. I chose the tomato pasta can and it is good. I added about 2 cups of boiling water and waited 10 minutes, stirring occasionally and had a nice bowl of soup. There is a LOT of pasta in it and I’d like to have seen some beans or lentils added in place of some to bump up the fiber and protein; currently fiber is 5 grams and protein is 11 grams. The can is a single serving. It is a vacuum sealed bag inside a can. Getting the bag out of the can took some work; I had to squeeze the can a few times and wriggle the bag a bit. They could use a more rounded and smaller bag so it would remove easily. Otherwise this is a good product. There are no junk ingredients, has a 10 year shelf life, the taste is good, and it’s an American company (in Wyoming). Their website has more items and you’ll get more with your budget there.

I decided to try one out. It's just an odd sized can with a single portion of rice and beans! So the can is too large for what it holds. I have a space problem, so I find these cans aren't as effective as #10 cans or individual meals in Mylar pouches! Can't comment on the taste yet, I haven't tried one yet. I guess if you have space to fill, try them. If you're like me, don't waste the space.
