Bought to fit through the tail of an acoustic guitar. It’s a small guitar: I wanted a small fitting, one that could go through one of its strongest available mounting points, whilst having the lowest detrimental impact on the volume and resonance of the sound box. This fits that ‘brief’ well. There was internal bracing of the bottom of the lower bout sides, running from the top to the guitar back. It’s relatively thick, and also ergonomically ‘ sensible’ for playing. This is where I installed.Installation was quite easy – but you have to remember to slide the nut and washer onto the connection cable – and it’s best to plug that cable in to this ‘TS’ jack plug socket before you push it into the hole you drill in the guitar. I polished the guitar and masked (masking tape) around the hole position before drilling, to avoid any ‘breakout’ or ‘tear’ in the guitar lower bout sides.The hole was drilled in stages. I used a pilot drill and a drill guide to get a ‘square’ fit. The hole drilled was just over just ‘interference fit’ in size: so that the socket could be pushed in with a thumb – avoiding any unnecessary stress on the guitar body. I put a tiny amount of beeswax on the top of the thread (to make it smooth to fit the nut) and a smear of clear silicone sealant on the bottom part of the socket which sits in the wood itself. The latter creates some bonding and resistance to movement (when set). Any residue on the guitar exterior, was trapped by the masking tape when the fitting was tightened up, then peeled off with it. Silicone sealant is good for this, because it fills any tiny gap, but the bond it makes can be carefully broken if for any reason you wish to remove this socket. Small hands and thin arms help in fitting the nut onto the socket ‘barrel’ – and tight ‘finger tight’ was fine compressing the retention washer.The result is great.

After a month of playing, it broke

I purchased several of these for guitar pickups, but on all of them the 3rd & important ground contact was removed from the 2.5 mm rear jack socket. So although it worked, it caused the 9volt battery in the piezo pre-amp to discharge quickly. Therefore, I had to remove the rear jack socket & solder directly to the outer metal shroud to remedy this product.
