PLUSH HYENA of DOOM
23 januari 2025
This review assumes that anyone who's actually HEARD of Andrewsarchus has more than a passing interest in palaeontology and thus knows what I'm talking about... (everyone else can just shake their heads despairingly and mutter "Dino-Geek" to themselves. (Yes, obviously this is a mammal, not a dinosaur...)So... How do you make an accurate model of an extinct animal known ONLY from a skull? Obviously a fairly significant amount of conjecture is involved... Andrewsarchus has long been considered to be a mesonychid, animals usually predatory, varying in size and resembling hyenas, wolves, bears... Not much to go on... Add to that the recent studies suggesting that Andrewsarchus might actually be an artiodactyl, possibly even a member of the cetancodontamorpha and thus potentially related to whales, well... You have an animal that might look like almost anything between a Giant Death Dog from Hell of Doom or a Freakish Lumpy Hippopotamus with a vaguely Crocodilian Head - (Ammut perhaps?) - IF it did have entelodont characteristics as some have suggested...The only thing we really, definitely know beyond any argument is that Andrewsarchus was BIG. The skull alone was almost three feet long. The biggest terrestrial mammalian predator we know of. And given its dentition, it was certainly a flesh eater... Personally, based upon the proportions of the skull, I still favour the more wolf or hyena like restorations and this model does an impressive job of rendering a likeness based on that form, with a somewhat hyena-like slope up to the shoulders, an animal meant more for stamina and power than for all out speed. Probably just relied on ambushing its prey and squashing it with the first pounce - or just causing it to suffer a seizure and fall over through debilitating terror. The model is well made, good and solid, and features very clear detail, with no nasty, obvious moulding lines. The fur texture is done well and it has a good paint job. It manages to capture something of the beast's character. Though not the cheapest model of Andrewsarchus available, of all the ones I've seen it's certainly the best. For anyone fond of this particular creature, this model is highly recommended.
