My daughter already being in ownership of several of the A-Star brand of percussion instruments, all of which are of good quality, I had no qualms in making them my go-to option when choosing a set of hand bells to expand her percussion 'section'.These hand bells are lighter in weight than I imagined, though as expected of this brand, they are well made and are perfectly tuned to the diatonic scale of our piano (disclosure: our piano is digital with fully weighted keys). The clapper of each bell is mounted on a spring and all are extremely responsive (not too much effort required to obtain sound) so would be equally suitable for the young child (I'd say around three on account of small parts - or earlier if they've stopped putting everything immediately to their mouth) right up to the elderly generation of the family - if they're so inclined. Close examination of the paintwork to each bell has revealed no flaws. In terms of size, the bells - inclusive of handle - stand at approx 13.5cm tall, the handle being approx 8.5cm in length, and the base of the bell is approx 7cm in diameter. The handle has a gradual taper (circumference around 6cm at bottom to 5cm at top) which whilst may seem a small thing to mention, I think worth doing so as it may contribute to the comfort in the hand. And they are comfortable to hold. For the purpose of this review, I weighed the lowest note bell (C) and the highest note (C-one octave above); they came in at around 85g and 83g respectively. Each bell has its' note name (and number) on a colour co-ordinated sticker, set on top of the handle. (Should these become damaged/unstuck/lost, each bell also has its' number stamped into the metal, close to the base of the handle). It may be worth noting that in low/poor lighting, or in the case of my daughter who is partially sighted, the notes on the stickers of the green, both shades of blue, and the purple bells can be quite difficult to see to read until you become familiar with the individual notes of the scale each bell represents. My daughter plays piano and she also has a xylophone with colour coded keys which are perfectly matched to the colours of this particular set of bells, so I think both have helped her to find her way around the individual bells quite quickly. If you are purchasing these hand bells as a gift, DO NOT expect bells and whistles in terms of the packaging. Ours were packed in a plain brown box from the manufacturer - not a problem to us but could disappoint some if unaware. However, each bell is wrapped individually to prevent damage and the box seems to have been thoughtfully sized to prevent the bells from too much movement in transit.Lastly, I felt it might be worth mentioning sheet music/book(s) suited to these bells. If purchasing a music book for your little one, do be careful here. Different brands may colour their handbells differently; i.e. in this set, middle C is red. It may be something entirely different in another brand! To this end, "I Can Play That" by Lena Eckhoff is perfectly matched for this particular set of handbells: Full Disclosure: at the time of writing, we do not own this particular book, though it is under consideration for a later date. The reason we do not yet own this title is for the simple reason that the book we have for my daughter's xylophone (as previously mentioned) is also a perfect colour-match for these hand bells. Our book: "20 Xylophone Songs and Melodies + The Fairy Tale with Musical Score using the Orff" by Helen Winter. (The Fairy Tale is great fun and if you should happen to have other percussion instruments, the fun can be expanded upon and enjoyed with the whole family!)Final thought:This set of bells appeared on my daughter's Christmas list of 2019. Alas, Santa thought he'd provided more than enough percussion instruments (he did outdo himself) on that particular trip! However, undeterred and ever the optimist, these bells appeared at the top of her Santa wish list for 2020!Santa made a good call. These bells have been in use every day since Christmas morning and thus far there is no indication of them falling silent anytime soon!If you choose these bells, I wish you and your family lots of fun with them!Reviewed: 29/01/2021
