I have a Panasonic DVD recorder onto whose hard disk I have transferred a lot of family videos, intending to record them to DVDs, but unfortunately the DVD drive became faulty before I had done it, so these precious recordings were stranded on the hard disk. However, I wondered whether I could transfer them to my computer and cut DVDs there and found this gadget which looked as though it might work. The reviews were pretty mixed so I wasn't optimistic but at the price it seemed worth trying.Well, in fact it's been brilliant. I connected the three RCA AV cables to my DVD recorder outputs, and the USB to my MacBook and started QuickTime Player. In that I selected "Start Movie Recording" and then just had to select the USB input for both video and audio and that was it. I clicked play on the DVD recorder and record in QuickTime. Later I tidied up my recordings in iMovie and wrote them to recordable DVDs. Job Done - it really couldn't have been easier. By the way, the instructions tell you to download and install something called OBS Studio; I didn't - you don'd need any software that isn't already on your Mac.Two minor niggles were easily overcome:1. The AV cables were female, as are the connections on my DVD recorder, but fortunately I had a set of male-to-male AV cables I used (which also meant the computer didn't have to right by the DVD machine). Without those I'd have had to buy some adapters.2. The USB plug is USB-A and the MacBook uses USB-C, like most things these days. Again, I had a USB-C to USB-A adapter, so again this didn't cause me a problem.So - overall I'm happy, especially at the price!

This works well but requires you to have access to OBS software, and to know how to use it to capture inputs. You can't use it as a standalone purchase. I initially had dual, delayed audio captured, but turning off microphone input in OBS resolved that.

After buying this I found an older identical one I inherited. Both supplied software versions were nigh on useless when used with my new Windows 11 PC.There is CAMERA software freely available for Windows 11 that is a better, much easier to use , method of video capturing some old 8mm videos I have.This device works a treat and although I have to record real time from 1hour long tapes the Windows free software is easy to use.To use camera on Windows 11 select video mode and ensure the input sourcw is set to this USB adaptor. Press record on PC and start playing a tape. Stop recording and a digital file is saved to your PC. Backup those memories before venturing into the realms of using video editing software.

The device works as a webcam, VHS to digital. It will not work when you try to copy VHS to digital, showing blank screen, which has been blanked by MS, due to USB genuine check. They state install the CD ROM in the instruction manual, there isn't one! You have to find a solution, there is none. Don't buy this shyte. It will disappoint. Keep your money! The is old legacy security IC's used in this device. DO NOT BUY! YOU WONT GET A REFUND...

I bought this to import Hi8 tapes for editing. I tried the software that comes with this, and I was dismayed by the picture quality. Unusable. I tried a few different ones until I found VSDC Free which has a capture program as well as an editor. Pretty happy with the quality now, as good as I could expect from my old tapes.
