I began my recent cable/power cord upgrade journey more on a whim with the objective of satisfying that now more infrequent curiosity as an audiophile about fixing the weakest link(s) in the setup. From years of experience, the "itch" to upgrade is a cumulative process over time. Reaching a crescendo as reviews, ratings and feedback are noted with particular emphasis on words or phrases applicable to your own case , all adding to the ultimate decision to pull the trigger and purchase. For me, my recent foray in the world of headphone listening , unexpectedly impressive it must be said, steered my focus to squeezing as much performance from my headphones (Aune SR7000) and headphone amp (Aune S17) as possible. Never before did I believe a headphone listening experience could pique my interest so strongly into exploring what possibilities lie ahead. Already an advocate for cable/powercord upgrades from adding Synergistic Research USB, Power Cords and Master Fuses to my reference audio system, the time was upon me to assemble some contenders for the headphone amp cable and power cord upgrade project. This time the emphasis was on Audioquest and their comprehensive suite of optical cable and power cord offerings. The assigned task centered on two areas of interest. The first being improving sound quality from my cable box to an aavik dac running to a rega amp and onto the sony spe speakers. As you can imagine , there is no shortage of good quality components already in the whole mix. The optical cable from SVS already in the system always seemed adequate. Then again I for one never really thought an upgrade would make much of a difference. Well I can now say I was wrong on all counts.First out of the box was the Audioquest Forest optical cable. Straight away the sound was more immediate, more impact, attention holding and displayed a vitality and vibrancy not heard before from the TV broadcast sound. Quite amazing in fact. Then the thought occurs, if the Forest is that good , just how much better are the Cinnamon, Carbon and the apex optical cable from Audioquest in the form of the Vodka. For the power cord side of things , sole attention went on the headphone amp. Audioquest NRG Z3 seemed to be the ticket. Quite favorable reviews everywhere online along with an acceptable price gave it the nod of approval. For a short while that is.Beginning with the optical cable showdown from Audioquest. The Forest was just the first taste of the potential with optical cable upgrades from Audioquest. Instead of jumping up the next rung of the ladder to the Cinnamon, I went ahead and took it to the next level with the Carbon. Already the sound was more revealing, noise distortion was reduced considerably, the soundstage was both more open and expansive and a sense of realism was now present. There was more air , clarity and a tightness to the lower and high frequencies in the sound. Being honest to myself, a dryness to the tonality and maybe a tad too lean timbre just never made me settle on the Carbon. As good as it was, the Carbon lacked a degree of musicality clearly present even in the Forest. So, what exactly would the Vodka bring to the table? To cut a long story short , everything the others offered yet with a degree of celebratory confidence. This is a cable that just loves to strut its stuff. My immediate reaction was a return to a more full bodied natural sound after trying the Carbon. Transients are now clearer and moving with more speed. Dynamics on a micro and macro level were served up with ease and grace. Imaging could be even holographic as elements at the front and back of the soundstage were differentiated and easily identified. There is a sparkle and allure to the Vodka where the Carbon seemed more austere and distant. Needless to say I am impressed and actually think it is worth the coinage put down for this cable. The journey for at least the optical cable in my audio system is now complete. A solid 5 out of 5 stars for the Audioquest Vodka. The sound now coming from the cable box to the cable box / aavik dac / rega amp / sony spe speakers is quite superb and the ditto for the cable box / aune headphone amp / aune headphones. Before we forget it, how about the Audioquest power cord upgrade running at the same time ?Just two to consider this time. The Audioquest NRG Z3 and the Monsoon. Both beefy cables with the Monsoon having some more heft and thickness to it overall. The addition of the NRG Z3 eliminated the rough edges and metallic texture to the sound impression from before. The soundstage was more defined , yet seemed compressed/congested with the various elements swapping front position and never actually sharing the sound space in an ensemble fashion. Not bad for the most part but what would the Monsoon do in comparison. As well as being an impressively built power cable, the Monsoon provides all that the vast majority of audiophiles could ever want from a power cord. The grip and delivery of all constituent elements in the music image is exemplary. Now the soundstage displayed all elements and layers with pinpoint accuracy and precision. The listener could easily imagine the music coming from the loudspeakers in front rather than the actual headphones now. The itch , the thirst if you will for something better in the audio listening experience has been sated by the addition of the Audioquest Vodka and the Audioquest Monsoon. Some things to consider when considering after market cables and power cords etc.1. The surrounding cast of audio components must be up to snuff or else you are throwing away your money. In my case dac, amp and speakers are all in the $6k to $8k+ range.2. You might just be a person who does not identify minor differences in sound through making changes and additions. Some people are either not capable or not open to recognizing these variables as presented.3. In my opinion, whatever the likes of Audioquest are doing in regards to cables and power cords is some seriously impressive engineering.4. In general terms and being reasonable about costs and return on investment. For the audiophile who appreciates increased sound quality by way of audio cable/power cord upgrades , Audioquest cables in the mid tier to mid high tier represent some of the best bang for your buck out there.
