I’ve played for about 35 years and am a member of an amateur recorder consort. I switch between three recorders: this, a Yamaha soprano, and a Moeck Rottenburgh rosewood model. This recorder is the least reedy of the three but excels at producing upper register notes. It’s not particularly loud, but the sound is refined, and it’s a well-balanced instrument for general use. The Yamaha gives me a bit more volume and a more “wooden” sound, but poor high notes. I use it occasionally when the consort is playing with Yamaha instruments.Of course both plastic models give me more trouble with condensation, but the Aulos is a nice maintenance-free alternative to the Moeck and useful for everyday practice. I live in a climate with cold temperatures and often play the Aulos until my Moeck has warmed up a bit, despite the inconvenience of having to retune. The tuning is very close to modern concert pitch and matches the Moeck when warmed up; the Yamaha is a bit sharp. I’ll probably use the Aulos for the bulk of my practice work. Recommended.
