The Alkozon repair plugs require a and a car’s tyre inflator to complete the repair. This quantity is more suited to an industrial application than the occasional private car’s puncture.IMPORTANT. Always get professional advice on the tyre as soon as possible after making a DIY repair. The real damage is inside, and can only be seen when the tyre is off the wheel.IMPORTANT. If the tyre has been allowed to go completely flat and has been run for more than a few yards, then it is probably already a write off with the insides reduced to rubber crumbs; don't bother even trying to repair a dangerously damaged tyre such as this.IMPORTANT. If the damage is in the side-wall or shoulder of the tyre then it is most probably not safe to attempt a repair.I would be wary of too big a puncture and would prefer to wait for rescue by the AA or RAC etc.If you can easily see the hole, then it is probably too big to repair. I've added a pencil to my kit to mark the puncture location on the tyre before removing the nail/screw. Not essential, but using some vulcanising glue can help make a better seal and a longer lasting repair especially if the sticky plugs are no longer as sticky as when new, and I carry some of these that can be binned after use rather than risk having a larger can leaking or setting after first use.I've used similar repair plugs on tubeless tyres in the past with good results lasting for tens of thousands of miles, but those repairs were for clean slow punctures from nails or screws in the centre of a tread block, and the tyres had never been run flat or even when under-inflated.I keep a repair kit in my little car because it does not have a spare tyre, nor the space to carry one. The car manufacturer's supplied repair system depends on a canister of goo to fix the puncture, but using that goo also renders the tyre un-repairable and imposes an 80kph speed limit. Fortunately they also supply a very useful inflator.Plugs get around the goo problem and make a better repair; the plugged tyre will not have the full original speed or load ratings, but at least the plug allows one a better chance to finish the journey at legal speeds safely, and then a tyre specialist can later examine the tyre to make an approved repair or replace the tyre if deemed necessary.Making the repair using a drill/rasp and 'needle' requires strong hands and a measure of determination, and assumes one was successful in removing the recalcitrant item that caused the puncture in the first place (I added a small wrench to my kit to help with this). But when needs must it is surprising how one can summon up enough strength. I carry some builder’s gloves in the car for such jobs, and they help a lot with improving the grip and reducing stress on the hands and fingers.
