Needed something to help carry food deliveries on my bike and this crate looked the part. It is very large, large enough to fit 3/4 bags of shopping depending on what you are buying.Feelings like it will last as the plastics feel thick and well made.Bought the mounts for £7 as well but I added a few cable ties to make the fitting extra strong. I am super happy with this item and it has been so helpful having so much cargo space.Easily 5 stars from me!

BLUF: This basket is helpful on those days when I need every bit of cargo carrying capacity on my commuter bicycle.Discussion: If you’re looking at this basket, you probably know that it is predrilled with holes for Basil’s Mounting is Key (MIK) bag adaptor and their crate mounting set. This was an important point for me since I wanted the utility of maximum cargo with the ease of plug and play. Specifically, I wanted the cargo capacity of the bicycle crate, but the flexibility to remove it when I only needed a small shopping basket or pannier. Therefore, I combined the crate with the MIK bag adaptor since I already had a Bontrager branded MIK rear rack and an Electra branded MIK front rack on my daily commuter – a Trek FX 2. Having said all that, if one is considering carrying a puppy or kitten in this crate, it would be my advice to get the crate mounting set.Background: Trek seems to be all in on MIK compatible bicycle racks, bags, and baskets. Likewise, Giant seems to be leaning that way with their Momentum brand. So, I wanted to try out some MIK products and racks from the local bike shop. Under their Electra Brand, Trek sells this crate in the medium size – with some cool looking Electra branding; but the small and large size crates are only available under the Basil branding online.Shipping: This product was shipped from the Netherlands via the postal system. I ordered the product on 19 Jun and I had it in hand by 02 Jul. Overall, an acceptable shipping timeline, but slower than higher volume items that are warehoused in the U.S. by Amazon or bicycle retailers. Something to keep in mind if one is also purchasing the MIK bag adaptor, MIK rack, or basil crate mounting set. Moreover, there is always the risk that U.S. Customs will pull this item out of the shipping system for a random inspection that will further slow the timeline.Carrying capacity: The interior measurements of the crate are 18-inch (l) x 12-inch (w) x 10-inch (h). It looks like the crate can carry the same contents as two and half of the large brown paper bags that one finds at supermarkets. A couple of quick tests indicates that I can fit around 15 large cans of Campbell’s Chunky Soup or five large (four pound) boxes of Minute Rice. However, it is just a smidge too narrow to fit a medium sized Domino’s Pizza. Since the MIK bag adapter weak points are just four small screws and a spring locking bolt, I would hesitate to try to stress test this basket with a very full load. I may end up putting the heavier items in my panier baskets and keep things like vegetables and snacks in the crate.Mounting: Just to be clear, this item is just a bicycle crate (or too some of us a milk crate). It is pre-drilled for Basil’s MIK bag adaptor and their crate mounting system. If you have a rack that is not MIK compliant and you want to use the MIK Bag adaptor approach, you will also need to purchase the MIK rack adaptor.So, to have a “quick release” bicycle crate, you would need (1) this crate, (2) the MIK Bag Adaptor, (3) MIK rack adaptor, and (4) a rack. If you already have an MIK compatible rack, then you can skip the MIK rack adaptor.To have a permanently mounted bicycle crate, you would need (1) this crate, (2) Basil’s crate mounting system, and (3) a rack.Obviously, you could devise your own mounting system, but if that is your intent, you do not need to purchase a crate predrilled for a specific company's products.I was unable to mount this crate on my front rack due to clearance issues with the brake lines. I suspect that I could make it work with an adjustable stem raising my handlebars a bit, but I cannot say that with certainty. It did mount to my rear rack without any issues.Add-ons: Obviously, it is a large piece of plastic. With drilling, zip ties, and some creativity; many things are possible. However, given that it is a “bike specific” crate, I had hoped for a couple of predrilled holes or at least obvious mounting places for reflectors, blinking lights or even headlights. I was a bit disappointed.Conclusion: If cargo capacity is important to you and you like the plug and play ease of the Basil mounting system, this is a useful product to consider.
