The BD Transfer is a solid backcountry shovel- best for non-avalanche prone terrain. It has decent length and good volume for digging.It doesn’t pack as small as some rescue shovels and won’t stow as easily on the outside of a pack. You may have to store it in two sections if you want to pack it internally, which is not ideal for quick deployment in emergencies.In non-avalanche terrain, I really appreciate the extra length of the Transfer handle. Saves my back and hamstrings a fair amount of work.The shaft is trapezoidal, which takes the guesswork out of indexing when you want to extend the handle. I hate fiddling around with some shovels trying to get the locking mechanism to line up just right.Replacement parts are available through BD which is nice because the aluminum shovel head will get beat up after a few seasons.
