Well made piece of kit quality finish

Purchased this after reading the reviews (especially those with installation tips) to replace an old plastic bathroom vent cover with friction clips that were no longer holding the cover flush to the ceiling. Was able to attach it to the same 2nd floor joist that the 4" rigid vent pipe was attached to--using just one 2" trim screw that I had on hand (after drilling out one of the mounting holes in the housing to accommodate the thickness of the trim screw). The housing fit snugly enough in the vent pipe to hold it in place while screwing the trim screw through sheetrock, old lath, and into the joist, making installation easy for me while on a step ladder. The trim plate was easy to twist into the house, and is perfectly flush to the ceiling. I was glad to see that the color (RL 9016) is not "bright" white, so it matches perfectly with my off-white ceiling. I have a couple more bathrooms with the old style vents, which I plan to replace with this item.

I've used the type with spring tension clips and ordered (and returned) the type with plastic ears and Calimaero TVSA 6-inch unit is the best solution I can imagine.The spring clips lost tension after five years to the point it wouldn't stay in the backdraft damper sleeve. I didn't see how to install the plastic-ear type without destroying the ears, one of which was broken on receipt.This comes in two pieces. The first is a metal collar with room-side flange that sticks through the 6" hole from the room side and leaves about (did not measure) two inches above half-inch drywall to fasten duct to. I zip-tied the plastic inner duct portion of insulated flex-duct to it on the first try with no problems. I highly recommend the huge 3-foot zip ties, bu the way.The second piece is the white 2-piece powder-coated metal diffuser with a center "plug" (for lack of knowing exactly what it's called) with threaded rod that adjusts from closed to fully separated.INSTALLATION TRICK submitted for your consideration: The collar has four very small attachment holes drilled around its flange facing the room. There is only about a quarter inch of drywall between the attaching hole and edge of the 6" ceiling hole, so attaching with drywall screws was not an option.My solution was to rummage through the over-bought hardware boxes in the garage until I found a cleverly labeled sandwich bag with 8x32 nuts and bolts. A pack of 1" bolts and some nylon lock nuts volunteered for the assignment. From my trusty roll of pipe strap, I flattened and snipped four pieces about 2" long to act as washers on the attic side to distribute the tension of the nuts, and put a little concave bend in each to move the contact points farther out. Danged OCD, and the buyers won't even know they need to thank me for their rock-solid diffuser!I enlarged the flange holes to accommodate the #8 bolts and drilled the same size holes in the ceiling. It was a bit tricky to drop the pipe strap "washers" over the 1" screws, but worked fine. My nut driver wasn't magnetized so I tore off a little piece of the plastic bag and wedged the lock nut into the driver with it, and tightened each screw from the room side with one hand on the nut driver sticking through the collar and the other holding the screw driver.After that, I washed my hands to keep the diffuser clean (and COVID-free [historical humor if you're reading this after life returns to normal and you no longer have to wait masked in a line to get into your local hardware store!]) and twisted the diffuser into the collar's locking ridges. The result is sturdy and attractive.I also highly recommend an axial fan mounted in your attic to very quietly and powerfully vent your bathroom. You probably already have one if you're shopping for these diffusers. One diffuser above the shower and another above the toilet for their respective purposes. Put a countdown timer on the wall, and Bob's your Uncle!
