My youngest cat is obsessed with these things! She is petite (7lbs) so it may not fit bigger cats but for cats her size it is great. We tried a few similar ones but none had a lip and this one does. I mean the blue frame part sticks up a tiny bit above the scratching surface. The other ones it's all flush. Since our gal likes to party on her scratcher with her silvervine and honeysuckle bits, the rim holds them on there, where she can rub against them, so it is a crucial part of the fun.Catnip isn't so great with a cardboard scratcher because it's small enough to fall through, but it still works ok for awhile before it all falls through. You can pull out the cardboard part once in awhile and pour the catnip out of the bottom back into the container or dump it back on the scratcher once reassembled. Not specific to this exact product but, I love cardboard scratchers compared to ones made with wood and carpet because they don't have any nasty fumes from glue or carpet, it's impossible to get a claw caught in them, and I believe they are greener both in manufacture and once worn out and thrown away.Don't forget to flip over the cardboard insert! There is a whole second side in there. A mistake we made a few times was thinking the cat had lost interest in the scratcher because she stopped using it. But it was just too worn to be fun, despite not looking all that bad to us, and once we flipped the insert or bought a fresh one, she was excited as can be! Learn from our mistake and pay attention to your cat's use of their scratcher- keep it fresh enough they remain interested! I've never kept track but I guess it lasts about a month or two per side. Easily afforded at this price. Get a few and keep spares around. The only downside is that they slide around. I buy those little silicone stickers you stick on cabinet doors so they slam quieter. I stick six or eight on the underside of the scratcher for grippy feet, and it stays put a lot better.

OK! So this is nothing more than a glorified cardboard product, but it is a furniture-saver and cat-pleaser, nonetheless. I love it! I've tried several of these with my cats nearly 10 years ago, and all they did was make a horrid mess I had to constantly pick up. The cats also tore through them like nobody's business, and I was too broke to keep replacing them. I've tried posts and even free, spare carpeting. The spare carpeting was the only thing that lasted, but those aren't much better when it comes to the mess, and they aren't exactly cost effective.I decided to try this product due to the wide size of it, but I turned out to be more than impressed. It's much sturdier than the older version I've used, and it seems to last a crazy-long time, helping me to save money. It also doesn't shed half as much as others I've used--at least, not until they've massacred it as much as they could. Even then it's still not as bad.Per someone else's suggestion on here, I flipped the insert over when I noticed it was getting worn down, which worked great and it was like new again. I ordered it in July and it would still be good to go, despite consistent, daily use; however, one of my cats apparently loved it so much, that they decide to yack all over it. I cleaned it up as best as I could and re-flipped it to the older side until I can purchase a new one. It's still working great--though my inner germaphobe is after a new one. This has been doing a wonderful job of saving door frames, beds, and prohibited areas of carpet. I was really worried they wouldn't grasp the transition from the pads of carpet I had out for them (which they actually stuck to while in use, amazingly enough), but they took right to the Catit. Only thing I'd change would be the ugly-ish font on the side for a more pleasing graphic, but it's not a huge deal. I've also started to consider the idea of attaching rubber shelf liner to the bottom to help keep it in place, as it does get moved about a bit much--again, not a huge deal. I also don't know where they get their catnip from, but it must be some A-Grade stuff! My cats go super nuts over it, which is rare, and I just do a little sprinkle every few months. I sometimes look down at them with envy as they roll around in a near-euphoric state. So not fair...
