Heel fijn dat ik eindelijk deze kerstfilm kon vinden. Jammer dat het alleen in het duits is maar deze mag gewoon niet in je collectie ontbreken. Deze film geeft voor mij het ware kerstgevoel helemaal weer.

Entrez dans le monde enchanté des noëls nordiques en achetant cette magnifique mise en images d'un conte de Noël qui se déroule dans les étendues neigeuses de Laponie !Des images somptueuses et inoubliables, un scénario solide qui laisse une place importante à la sensibilité, y compris des plus jeunes, des interprètes de qualité pour un film éblouissant et sans égal qui plaira aux enfants et à leur parents.Aux antipodes des productions des studios Disney, c'est une véritable plongée dans le monde traditionnel de cette fête unique dont tous les membres de la famille se souviendront!A certains égards, les images du film rappellent les oeuvres de certains illustrateurs ou illustratrices comme Jenny Nystrom, Jan Bergelind ou la finlandaise Martta Wendelin car toutes participent d'une même vision de ce moment magique.J'avais acheté à sa sortie le DVD finlandais sous-titré en anglais et j'ai acquis au moment de sa parution le DVD sous-titré en français et je ne regrette en rien ce double achat ayant pu faire visionner et faire partager cette réalisation dans le cadre familial un an plus tôt.Hyvää Joulua ! .......there was a young orphan boy called Nicholas in this cleverly re-imagined Finnish take an the Santa Claus folklore. This film is unusual n that it grounds the story in human experience before it becomes the perennial legend that we all know and love. The lavish production values are well integrated with an excellent story. When he is orphaned, young Nicholas is cared for by six families for one year at a time, as no one family can afford to support him in the harsh realities of their poor fishing community. After his sixth year the boy's only hope of refuge comes from "Crazy Isaac" as the local children call him, a mean wood carver and furniture maker who lives in a remote house outside the village. It is through this hard task master that Young Nicholas learns his craft. This film cleverly blends fairy tale darkness with timeless human values of love and gratitude for the village families who cared for Nicholas with beautiful cinematography. The perceptions of Santa that we are familiar with develop throughout the film. One thing is obvious watching this, the winter scenes were filmed in extremely harsh conditions in Finnish Lapland, which the excellent feature on the making of this film makes clear. Problems with cameras, problems with lights due to the extreme cold. Even the reindeer used for pulling the sleigh proved temperamental, though they were probably the only ones not feeling the cold! The seventy five minute run time is just right and supports the pace of the story line nicely and an excellent DVD transfer too with good sound, but no subtitles. This is a Finnish language film with English voice overdub, but the voice acting is excellent. this film strikes an unusual blend, sometimes dark and moving, yet ultimately joyful and uplifting that makes it stand out from so many Christmas movies. A family classic and nice to see available on a physical format.
