It does what it's supposed to do, and you do not need the additional straps. As other reviewers have said, you just reach underneath and put the support pole in place. Also, the pole is high enough that there is no puddling in the low spots.Update: As some of the other reviewers had said, the plastic material is kind of flimsy. I purchased two, one is working fine and the other has snapped at the joint. I guess the wind and snow were too much for it. Good idea and works as long as it isn't subjected to too much stress.It's now March, and I think that I've come up with a solution to the flimsiness of this support pole. I returned the bottom half of the umbrella pole back into the umbrella base that's under the table, and then I removed the dome section from the Adjustable Support Pole and placed it into the top of the original umbrella pole . The dome prevents the umbrella pole from punching a hole through the cover when, for example, snow is on it and, of course, it makes for a much stronger support. And, the icing on the cake is that it is impervious to wind, and so no straps are needed.

Sturdy and solid build and it has two height options which helps with the water drainage depending on the slack and furniture shape / size.

It stated, no straps and that is something that is important. Without straps it is harder to keep upright in the table. Once it it stable, it works great… just need straps to hold it in place for set up and if you have a windy location.
