Claus Hessler's Camp Duty Update: Snare Drum Rudiments: Bridging the Gap Between Past and Present

Claus Hessler has done a lot of research on the history of rudimental military drumming, and this fascinating book is the result. In addition to a lot of historical information (including illuminating notes on performance practice), Claus includes many U.S. Camp Duty pieces and other well known ancient rudimental pieces, such as the Downfall of Paris. But in addition to including the original drum parts to these tunes, Claus has also included updated versions of them, which contain interesting (and often challenging) phrasing, while still remaining musical. The appendices include notes on the differences in rudimental nomenclature between different traditions (Swiss, French, ancient and contemporary) as well as some technical exercises that involves phrasing with quintuplets.The audio disc that comes with the book includes Claus's performance of all the pieces, with fife accompaniment, as well as play along tracks with just the fife part (to which you can play the traditional drum part or Claus's updated version).This book is not a primer on learning the rudiments, per se, but rather seeks to fill in the historical context of the music from which our modern drum rudiments were derived. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the origins of rudimental drumming.
