Bank-robbers unwittingly let loose a zombie horde onto the streets of London, in this comedy horror from director Matthias Hoene. Andy (Harry Treadaway) and Terry (Rasmus Hardiker) are determined to save their grandad Ray (Alan Ford)'s care home by robbing a bank. But when they break into a 350-year-old underground vault, the gang of robbers realise they've bitten off more than they can chew when they unleash a zombie army. With the undead looking for their next meal, the gang, led by Katy (Michelle Ryan), must rescue the old folks, all the while battling their way to freedom with their hard-earned dosh.

Andy and Terry are brothers who, along with an odd collection of friends and family, commit a bank robbery with the aim of securing money to save their grandfather's old-person's home from developers. But at the same time an ancient underground tomb is opened, unleashing ancient zombies that infect the population of East London. It can be a very difficult task, blending horror and comedy elements in the making of a movie. In many instances the result is a mess but the filmmakers seemed to understand the requirements and delivered a movie which treads the line more than just competently. For most of the film there are two distinct stories proceeding - the bank robbers on one side and the old people on the other. Of course they come together in the end with the help of a red double-deck bus, of all things. There's plenty of time spent exploring all of the main characters, giving the viewers some insights, but soon enough the zombies arrive and the killing commences. If you want blood and gore, there's plenty of this on display with loads of explicit kills. There's a great cast and it's a lot of fun.

I usually dislike zombie movies. To be more exact, I dislike almost every American zombie movie I've seen, as they all seem cut from the same crop of cliches and there's no point in getting invested in any of the non-zombie cast because if they're not all dead by the start of the closing credits they'll be killed off some time during the closing credits. Now that I've got that out of the way, let me say that after catching part of 'Cockneys Vs. Zombies' on cable, I made a point of getting my own DVD of it as soon as possible, something I didn't even do after seeing 'Shaun Of The Dead'.American moviemakers may turn out far, far more zombie movies than anybody else, but the Brits seem to do a much better job of it. They also give their zombie flicks a distinctly British slant and in so doing turn several zombie flick tropes on their heads. For example, in every American zombie movie the doomed protagonists have to learn all over again to shoot zombies in the head to stop them for good. In this movie, the protagonists come by the information quite early in the movie. There are two different groups trying to survive this particular Zombie Apocalypse: A small gang of decidedly blue-collar types, none of them hardened criminals, who decide to rob a bank in a good cause, and a cadre of old-age pensioners living in a facility slated for demolition in the near future. When the zombies show up, plans have to be put on hold. It's soon apparent that growing up on the streets of London's East End has endowed both groups with a certain mental toughness and a set of survival skills that serve them well as they struggle to survive. And none of the female characters are weak, helpless types prone to mindless screaming in the face of danger, not even the octogenarians. While there is gore, and messy death, and entrails, 'Cockneys Vs. Zombies' feels nowhere near as grim as an American zombie flick. There's a bit of humor (or should I say humour?) here and there. There's also a thrilling chase scene for those who like that sort of thing. If you're tired of cookie-cutter Yankee zombie movies, this will be a welcome change of pace.
