You can't always lock your MacBook up in the hotel safe. There have been times it just does not fit - why is beyond me. I use this cable to protect my MacBook from being stolen. I know that in hotel rooms it's a deterrent, but I try to find something that can't easily be moved to run the cable thru. If i have to leave my MacBook in my car - I place it in the trunk and use spots in the trunk to run the cable thru. It makes it hard for a thief to steal it. If a thief finds it hard to take - they usually move on to something easier. You have to. be careful installing the part that goes on the MacBook - those screws are TINY and easily dropped. The installation comes with an appropriate sized screwdriver also. The cable is a combination cable so no need to keep up with the key (which I always lost). This should only be one part of protecting your computer assets. You should encrypt the hard drive and any files you want kept private also.

The instructions require you to hold in a button on the bottom of the head while changing the combination.Apparently I must have inadvertently released that button while trying to turn the dials since after changing the combination, neither the default combination nor the new one I set works.I tried twice (returned the first unit and tried again on a second unit with the same problem).I eventually got the unit to work - work through hundreds of combinations until I figured out what it had been set to and then had someone else help me to reset it. Even after that, I had to manually realign the mechanism to get it to operate correctly.I'm keeping the unit since I prefer it to the keyed option, but I will also be carrying the screwdriver with me in case I ever can't get it to unlock. You can remove the lock from the device simply by unscrewing it, but it does appear to be a special screwdriver.

Overall a great product. Pros: I feel very secure leaving the computer unattended now. The lock, bracket, and cable are all of very high quality, very hefty. Well designed with great tolerances — fits like a glove on my m3 pro. Looks nice. The curved shape doesn’t interfere with sliding my macbook in and out of my messenger bag. Some may say you could just unscrew it — it’s a very nonstandard screw — not worried about that. Cons: the lock dials are kind of hard to move individually without accidentally moving the dial next door. The weight of all the components does add noticeably to my bag weight, but that’s a reasonable tradeoff. The silver color, although clean looking does contrast a lot with space black. I wouldn’t be surprised if the metal part which attaches to the macbook scratches the finish over time since it’s metal on metal. Overall, almost perfect, but minor setbacks. I would still buy again.

Do not buy the one with combination. You can just use the long combination lock to lever the whole thing off the MacBook. Buy the key version the mechanism is shorter and harder to get enough leverage on it to pull it all off the macbook
