I have a high performance vw air cooled engine in my desert buggy, This is the correct belt if you have an alternator. Brand new is needed 4 shims on the upper pulley. Very soon it will need 3 shims. It would have been nice if it started a mm or two shorter but it is fine working so far.

There's an interaction between the width & length of a belt for the VW type 1 VW, since spacers are used to adjust the tension. This belt works well for the stock applications. 4 spacers are needed for a new install, then after a few miles the belt will stretch a little then adjust to 3. The serrations in the belt help it to grab better. The last one I had lasted about 20,000 miles when using no spacers it finally started slipping. I always keep a spare since this is an on/off road application and since the cooling fan is belt driven, if the belt breaks your SOL.
