The problem:I was changing the front brake pads & discs on my rusty 2003 Ford Focus and sure enough…the threads stripped from one of the calliper mounting bolt holes (This happened on both sides of the car!).New parts = not economically viable repair (potential parts required: steering knuckle/hub carrier, wheel bearing, hub for both sides)The solution:Thread repair…after a little research (Google) I identified the correct size of ‘thread insert repair kit’ needed. I found this kit on PRIME, next day delivery, for less than £12.00!!!Comments on use:I must admit that I was a little dubious after reading some of the negative reviews, however, I felt for the price it was worth a go. My experience of using this kit is very positive, I think patience is key to success.If you have access to drill bits slightly smaller than the one in the kit, run these through the hole first, the drill bit in my kit was 9.3mm, so I ‘opened the hole up’ in stages using: 8.5mm and 9mm drill bits, finally going through with the 9.3mm bit supplied in the kit. All drilling carried out at slowest speed on my battery drill and apply plenty of lubrication at all stages, I used WD40 because that’s what I had on hand.There is no wrench for the ‘thread cutter’ supplied in the kit. Fortunately, I had a suitable wrench from a tap and die set. I found that the ‘drive’ end of a 1/4 drive socket was a good fit for my thread cutter. I advise against putting it in the chuck of drill and using the drill.It is really important that the thread cutter is kept ‘square’ to workpiece, take your time with this process, use lots of lubricant and regularly turn the cutter back (half a turn) to release any ‘chips’…slow and steady is the way to go.Fitting the thread insert is pretty straightforward and self explanatory and the supplied instructions are sufficient.In my case, I cleaned the newly cut threads with brake cleaner spray, when thoroughly dry, I applied red threadlock fluid and screwed in the insert and snapped the ‘tang’ off using the supplied tools.Overall, this kit has worked for me and got me out of a difficult situation, as such, I recommend it.
