For myself, this is without a doubt, the most beneficial book that I have read in my road to learning bass! Yet, there are no bass techniques (well, barely any) mentioned in the book. Instead, this is a book on how to approach learning bass. Educational and psychological principles, rather than the musical principles.In a simple, approachable and engaging manner, Paul presents a set of principles, based on scientifically backed psychological and educational principles, in a way that you can apply them to your own bass playing practice.Applying these principles to your own bass playing, will help you get the most benefit out of every minute of your precious practice time.Btw, not just for bass. These same principles could be applied to learning any musical instrument and many other skills.I like Paul's analytical and critical approach. I will be buying a lot more of his books.

Just get a book on deliberate practice in general and work out your own application for bass playing. You will learn a lot more and it will be just as applicable to the bass as what you can glean from this overgrown pamphlet of a book.I had hoped that this would provide more a more specific guide for just what should be tackled with deliberate practice in order to progress from beginner to accomplished bassist.While people are all at different levels, if you provide them with a comprehensive list of progressions, most will be able to figure out what they do and don’t need from that list.But as with so many books and YouTube teachers, the author uses a “everyone has different needs” excuse to NOT provide a step-by-step list of the things you need along that path.And he spends too much time telling the reader that “if you want to learn more about XX, then go off and read this other book,” many of which are his own.This was a lazy attempt to capitalize on others’ groundbreaking work in deliberate practice that does not contribute in any real way, except to the author’s bank account.
