Mr Tester

I have an obession with torches and also do quite a lot of photography and have considered whether I should have some means of measuring light values. It's not so much about getting accurate values but more that you can compare different light sources which is actually rather difficult to assess with your eyes sometimes (unless the difference is quite large). This meter by INFURIDER now gives me the opportunity to measure some of my lighting situations. The meter sells for just under £33 and I think that it's very good value. You get the meter, batteries for the meter, a screwdriver to release the battery compartment, and a carrying case. For once I am impressed with the 'user manual' - actually it's only a double-sided sheet of A4 paper but it manages to cram in a lot of useful information, which makes a pleasant change from the usual user manuals I see these days! There's also a standard 1/4" tripod bush on the base.I am no expert with the science of lighting but I hope that by spending some time getting to know the INFURIDER I will learn more. My specialised torches measure their output in Lumens, and I have been on the web to find out the comparison between Lumens and LUX... there's plenty of info, along with conversion tables freely available. We all know that that the incandescent lightbulbs we grew up with now are used to evaluate by comparison with the light output from modern LED lighting. It's useful to see things like "this is the equivalent of a 60W light bulb", but I will now be able to assess lighting products much more easily.I have never used a tool like this before and the small amount of research I have done has pointed out how lacking my knowledge actually is. I do now understand how to compare the Lumens with LUX in a general purpose kind of way, and that understanding was gained just by searching online.I think that a lot of people will find the table that's printed on the A4 sheet quite useful. It outlines what the recommended LUX measurements are for certain environments such as 'Office' or 'Hospital'. As a photographer this meter can give me useful information in a similar way to a normal photographic light meter. I have read that, for instance, a LUX measurement of 1000 suggests an exposure of f2.8 at 1/50th second when using 100-ISO film.Operationally the meter seems logically laid out, but I am still familiarising myself with some of its functions. I think the LCD display is fine and the backlight really very effective. I do like the fact that you can turn on the backlight and have it on for as long as you need... most backlit displays tend to auto-turn off after a few seconds. You can set the reading to LUX or Fc (footcandles), and record ranges, max-min etc. There's even a built in temperature display which can be set to °C or °F.I am still learning the ins and outs of the INFURIDER but so far I am impressed with what it does for the price. I have been "enlightened" and so reckon 5 Stars are in order for this tool.

Light is very important, especially in photography which I do a lot of. It affects the mood of the subject with the proper positioning and the right amount of light that passes through the subject, that is why I was pleased to try out this portable light meter. The Infurider handheld luxmeter can precisely measure light luminance from 0.1-400,000 lux (0.1-40,000FC) and with a speedy 2~3 times sampling per second, this digital illuminance meter is always within a +/-4% of lux reading with a high resolution of 0.1. the maximum display reading is 3999 and it has an auto power OFF feature after 10 mins to save energy. It comes with 2 x 1.5V(AAA) batteries, a protective carrying case, and a small screwdriver for the battery cover. It is easy to adjust to the direction you want to measure. With the multi-directional measurement, this allows you to measure the light from different angles, so you don’t need to turn around light luminosity.I can conveniently measure the light levels in different areas at various times because it can keep 33 sets of data logging. Through this data I can compare the lighting suitable for my greenhouse, office, and photography. As you can see, it has a lot of buttons displayed, for me it was quite confusing at first, so it is a good idea to check the manual and familiarise yourself with the device.Overall, I think it is a bit pricey, but it does provide good results.

This works OK and gives readings that appear to be reasonably accurate as far as I can tell (I only have a phone app to compare it to). However the plastics it's made from feel cheap, the buttons are mushy rubber affairs and the screen is a bit wishy washy, which makes it hard to read from certain angles.Searching Amazon for similar products reveals plenty of other options at slightly lower prices that look to be of equal or higher quality. It does the job but I suspect your money might be better spent elsewhere.

This is made to a budget and dont be put off by that as it is an excellent product that is very accurate. The light sensor head can be rotated 270° in total. The bottom of the unit has a standard photographic 1/4" thread female stud for tripod mounting. The buttons are rather interestingly arranged like a telephone dial of old which you get used to quickly to select the various settings you want. I've only ever measured light in Lux or Lumens so Foot Candles (FC) was a new scale option for me. Easy to see which modes and settings you have set. Clear LCD display - albeit older style of LCD which offers only a tight viewing angle which you also get used to. Remember the product is very good value for money ! The 33 data points store is very useful for taking multiple measurements to compare or to take say at different points in say a greenhouse. The range is amazing at 0.01 to 40,000 Lux arranged in three ranges the first 10,000 Lux, then 10,000 to 20,000 Lux then 20,000 to 40,0000 Lux. Resolution accuracy is 4%, 5% and 8% respectively. Temp is 0°C to 40°C and accurate to within 1°C. Overall i've found it a very useful light meter and happy to recommend it, Andrew

I like INFURIDER products (most of the time). I've used their carrying cases and tube stands before and found they offer very good quality to price ratio.Sadly from my experience with this "881F" light meter and having looked at their other models here on Amazon, it seems to be their light meters tend to be great, or not so great. For example, their "YF-881D" model has nearly 80 reviews, most of them four or five stars, and is cheaper than this model. However, others like their "YF-881C" has mostly one and two-star ratings. This model IS a very accurate light meter. My friend has a much more expensive model from a different manufacturer which I borrowed to compare. There is very little difference between them in terms of readings, speed, refresh rate and so forth in practical use. I also liked that this "YF-881F" meter head can rotate 270 degrees and is not fixed. It is a helpful feature meaning you don't have to keep turning your wrist back and forward should you keep needing readings from different directions. There are also other useful features such as the "hold" button and data storage of the reading. So why only 2-stars?Well, I found the LCD screen to be poor quality and difficult to read at "normal" eye-level angles and in some lighting conditions. It is backlit and there is a "light" button on the meter should you want to try and change the brightness and so forth, but it didn't help. A number of times I had to double-check what I was seeing on the meter or tilt it to a different angle so the display was clearer. This was really disappointing, it doesn't matter how good the meter is if it's difficult to understand or read that information. I noticed another reviewer has also mentioned this and has provided pictures, so you might want to read his review as well for a better illustration.I also found there are too many buttons, too small and too close together. If you are holding the meter like me, then chances are you'll be using your thumb to press buttons, however (unless my thumbs are unusually fat) I found more often than not I ended up pressing the wrong thing by mistake (or rather because of the design.)I feel that I'm perhaps being a bit too mean giving this item a two-star rating, but that hard-to-read LCD screen really was a big failing. It is a shame as mentioned this is otherwise a good meter. While I personally didn't like this model, I would advise that you take a look at their other light meters and not just discard them completely.
