Eccellente!

It has only been four years since Doom was released on Xbox One, PS4 and PC. The game is a re-boot of the classic first person shooter franchise and took a lot of people by surprise. The game was fast paced, viciously violent, smooth to control and had an absolutely killer soundtrack. After playing through the game for the third time, I found myself really thinking of the music. Something that I rarely do with video games these days. Because of this, I decided to purchase the official game soundtrack and boy... I was not disappointed. The Doom original game soundtrack is a master work by the musician Mick Gordon. This fellow has worked on a lot of previous Bethesda games including Wolfenstein and the new Doom Eternal. He has worked on Borderlands 3 and did an excellent soundtrack for the indie game Beautiful Desolation. The man has done some great work in recent years, this double album being his crowning achievement. Most people remember the Doom OST for its heavy metal riffs. Those nasty brutal sounding "djent" rhythms with heavy drums are quite a contrast to the typical orchestral heavy stuff that is now too common in gaming. The first time you hear something like, Rip & Tear, it just hits you in the gut and remind you of just how bad ass Doom was back in the '90s with its rippin' midi metal music. There's a lot of great metal moments like this thrown throughout. But to mix it all up, there's a good bit of dark atmospheric music. These horrific pulsing tracks are actually just as entertaining as the metal. They provide the listener with some great atmosphere and breaks up the repetition of the harder tunes. To describe the sound on the Doom OST is not so easy. It obviously has it's metal influences but there's also plenty of industrial moments, some techno beats here and there as well as some really synth heavy stuff. It's a great varied album to listen to and sounds immense as it distorts, twists and grinds between each song. It's such a strange collection of music that I can see it attracting people with interests in multiple genres of music. My only real gripe here is the fact that it's been engineered a tad loud. I'm not a fan of the loudness wars and this is easily a casualty of it. Thankfully, the music doesn't have many artifacts or distortion. It is simply too loud for its own good. It's a shame really as this is something that really needs to be played loud.As it is though, this is a fantastic soundtrack. One that I highly recommend picking for fans of the game. Heck, my sister loved it and she hasn't even played the thing yet! This is possibly the most exciting video game soundtrack I have heard since the days of when Frank Klepacki was destroying us with Act On Instinct and Hell March.
