While I really loved the design on this Dress Up America Japanese Kimono for Girls - Traditional Kimono Robe Costume Set for Kids (Small), and was pleasantly surprised at the silk-like fabric, a few issues kept it from being an easy 5-Star costume choice for kids. The seams are all serged, but the spots right at the point of the kimono sleeves are not double-stitched. They'll unravel with just normal wear, so even though your child may just wear this once as a costume, I'd secure that area with a few stitches, especially if they'd actually want to wear this over & over again for role playing or cosplay. And the obvious black overstitching on a couple spots on the obi, while reinforcing the stitching in those spots, kind of ruins the prettiness of the design. It takes it down a notch from being a somewhat believable kimono outfit to a costume level outfit. There's a long zipper on the back for ease of putting on, so it's not the faux obi that's holding the "robe" closed; it's a dress style instead. The fabric is thin, so if the weather will be cold, make sure the child is wearing thermals underneath. The fabric really is silk-like, but that also means this type of material & weave tends to reflect holes & runs easily. (So if you need to undo stitching, it can look obvious & you'll need to fold it over to hide that area.)Personally, I really like the neutral olive & champagne colorway; it's very sophisticated & not flashy. So if your child prefers wearing bright colors, this may look too adult to them. Though, on the flipside, that may also be why they'd enjoy wearing something more adult-like.The tabi socks have a bit of cushioning on the sole & they may stretch enough to fit a range of tiny feet. And as for the hair ornament, it's kind of unusual. I've never seen that style, though the closest I can think of are kushi (hair combs) that are usually made of wood, metal, or celluloid. As an alternative, you can use hair clips or hair pins with lots of flowers & dangling bells or crystals. Ones in either goldtone or silvertone with faux pearls would also go well with this costume.

The Dress Up America Japanese Kimono/Traditional Kimono Robe is stunning! The material looks and feels like silk. The print is clear, without any smudges or misprinting. It displays a pheasant-like bird, a flowering tree, wheat, and chrysanthemums. The colors are beautiful autumn colors—off-white/cream, rusts, browns, and deep olive greens. The dress slips over the head and zips up the back. The Obi (sash) fastens with Velcro. I'm going to sew something to change that - possibly add a wide ribbon to wrap around the waist - this will also help with sizing. I think the Velcro cheapens the look and feel of the kimono. The tabi socks are the best fun extra! It makes wearing sandals with the kimono possible. Besides the Velcro, the only drawback of this kimono is the wrinkles. Wowza! It is one big wrinkle! A mess of wrinkles! Did I stress that it is exceptionally wrinkled?! If you don't like to iron - skip this and look at something else. If you don't mind ironing, this is a fabulous play kimono that the wearer will love.

My niece's class was asked to dress up in outfits representing their heritage and I was delighted to find this Japanese kimono for her to wear. The kimono has a lovely, understated floral & pheasant design. The color scheme and print seemed kind of grown-up for a child's costume, but it looks beautiful in person and my brother-in-law assures me it is more authentically Japanese than something bright and colorful. The kimono is faux and is a single-piece dress that you pull on over your head and zip up the back. The obi sash attaches with velcro in the back of the dress. We did not use the headpiece, we opted for some fake flowers instead. My niece's favorite part of the costume is the Tabi socks and that we let her wear flip flops to school that day. The Tabi socks have some padding on the bottom and she wears them all the time now. This costume set includes 1 kimono dress, 1 obi sash, 1 pair of Tabi socks and 1 hairpin. The fabric is soft and feels silky. It has some stretch to it, but not a lot. The dress does need to be hung up or it wrinkles and needs to be ironed. It is a fine, thin fabric so I recommend that your child wears something underneath, especially on cooler days. The fabric feels nice, but is not very durable. Be careful that your child doesn't snag it as it will tear a hole in the fabric that is not easy to hide or repair. I do love that it is machine washable, though, as it makes it so much easier to keep clean. If you are looking for a costume to help your little one dress up in a child-friendly Japanese outfit, this is a solid choice. It fits my niece well and she loves wearing it. I think she looks adorable so it was worth every penny.

I would call my 5 year old tall and slim so usually wears a size 7, 8 is too wide. 6 is too short. This costume is both too wide and too long for her but mostly too wide because the belt will not stay up. I expected it to fit. The quality overall is just average but she does like the costume.

This child costume is well designed and constructed. The pattern and accents make it stand out as the perfect thing to play with for any child. It is easy to clean and and wear. It is a great value for the money.
