This works really well, seems to work on the VHF and UHF bands just fine and gives more gain of course than your standard rubber ducky. That said, be careful as this mounts to your SMA but since it's so huge it could damage your radio.

TREADALT-TEC makes a few similar tape antennas with different lengths. The first one I received was an 18" antenna (exactly same look, but shorter). Amazon was super nice about the mixup and let me keep that one while they sent out the correct one, so I ended up with two: 18" and 42.5". I use TD-H3s, UV-5Rs and Talkpod A36s in my park, so this review is mostly comparing these 2 antennas vs each as well as versus the stubbies that come with the radios. First of all, they fit TD-H3s and Talkpods straight up without any issues. UV-5R is a little wonky since the seat of the antenna is not deep enough and screwing both of these tape antennas leaves a bit of gap (about 1mm). Luckily, both of these antenna come with a special washer you can put around the base to close this gap, so be mindful to not lose it if you have or are considering Baofengs.I do not have a signal analyzer to measure the performance in detail, but subjectively both of these tape antennas work considerably better than original stubbies on the radios. In my hilly area (with rock obstructions in the way), they extended the range by ~50%. So for the price, you cannot go wrong with these. I also love the fact that they fold neatly and actually don't take much space at all. However, I did not observe any perceivable difference in range between 18" and 42.5". They both eventually cut out in almost exact same spot. I expected more range out of 42.5", if anything due to being just higher. Turns out this was not the case. End result is that:18" TREADALT-TEC tape antenna: 5 stars. It's still quite manageable in size and gets a great reception.42.5" TREADALT-TEC tape antenna: 4 stars. No obvious difference in range or reception, and it is MUCH bulkier when fully unfurled. It's giant. TD-H3s look comically small compare to that antenna. It is so big, that I'm seriously worried about hitting something with it and breaking the antenna socket on the radio.

Does it look goofy? Yep!Does it increase your performance significantly? You Bet!We use our Baofeng radios between boats on the water, and sometimes you can reach one another a few miles apart, sometimes you can't. it depends on terrain between you. On our lake with many peninsulas, coves, and trees you need a little more antenna!Well? This is a lot more antenna! It's about 4 feet long, but it pulls in everything! I know why they always use these type antennas in the military. There is no substitute for altitude or length when it comes to an antenna. This isn't going to get you in touch with a ham on the other side of the planet, but it may get you to a repeater you've never been able to hit with a rubber duck antenna. It works well when folded, although it's definitely more bulky. But when you need that extra "oomph!", remove the velcro, and it stands up perfectly straight! No bending, no sag! It's like those "Slap Bracelets" the kids used to play with. It wants to snap into the perfectly straight and rigid position it was born to live in.I've seen these recommended by scores of survivalist, prepper, Amateur radio operator, and Emergency preparedness websites, so I thought I'd give them a try! They're "all that!"Like I said, they're not going to take the place of your antenna tower, but it'll easily double or triple your point to point range if both radios are using this type of antenna..As an added bonus, it works extremely well with My Malahit SDR radio. It requires an adapter to fit, but it's a pretty decent receiving antenna to boot!
