Greyscale set:I have only used the grayscale markers in this set. I have also use tombow and staedtler brush pens in their watercolor versions... I've also used alcohol-based markers. These are very juicy markers. The Econoline refills appear to be the ink bottles with the eye droppers.I needed to use my teeth to unscrew it the first time but these are absolutely refillable and they look like they're very good quality stick markers with heavy plastic and they feel comfortable in the hand to use. Royal talens / Ecoline says that these are due based and implies that they are not light fast, so I'll only be planning to use them in sketchbooks, and not pieces that plan to be framed. I'm totally okay with that..right after I first try these, I immediately ordered a couple more Gray's that were loose pens so that I will have a few more. They work very well with watercolor, and they do layer and acts like watercolor on the paper. I don't know about lifting the colors on watercolor paper once it's dried I'm hoping that they don't lift very easily because I'm wanting to use these to add shadows. The paper that these are switched out on in the photographs is arteza acrylic heavyweight paper. When I run a wet brush over them they do not lift at all. The tones do change temporarily. And then they seem to turn back to their original hue. I'm pretty happy with that, although this paper is terrible for watercolor so I'm not sure how it will work on normal watercolor paper but I don't think it will be a lot different. because the ink in these markers is fairly wet I can see that it's potentially something that might smudge a lower layer of color or pick up color in the nib. The nibs are not actually brushes but a solid piece of fibrous tip. It is flexible however though and you can get a fairly thick line as well as turning it sideways for a thinner line.If you look at the photo that shows the word 'Greys' close up, notice that the edges and pigment density really emulates a watercolor stroke. particularly on the very tail of the why how it gets lighter towards the tip of the letter's tail where the pen was moving more quickly as I lifted it.

I wanted these to use to quickly make tonal studies from pencil or ink sketches. ( I don't get on well with solvents so needed something waterbased.) I've got quite a lot of Royal Talens products that are good quality and was expecting these to be okay and liked the idea that you could refill them.I was horrified to find that these can't be used on my multimedia paper or cellulose watercolour paper as they streak, absorb unevenly and pill up the surface of the paper. These papers happily accept other water-based media so it's definitely these pens. I kept trying new surfaces and found that they only worked well on some paper that had a 50% - 100% cotton content.I may be a bit dim but know that's not what was promised on the pack and am furious. I've found my Canson/Hahnemuhle/Daler Rowney sketchbooks good and expected these pens to work for fast studies in them rather than ruin them. Don't waste your money on these.
