This little electromagnet matches up with the claimed dimensions and arrived alongside a M4 mounting screw and washer placed into a small grip-seal plastic bag. It feels as well-made as any small scale & cheap electromagnet, it functioned as expected when I applied 5V from my variable PSU to the non-polarised wires. It has no issues with a fair bit of weight and during use my PSU gives an amperage reading of about 0.5A with it powered up.As usual with these types of electromagnets, you don’t really want to run them non-stop or for long durations as they have a tendency to overheat, which can permanently lessen the strength. With the smaller size, even with this bolted to a heat sinking metal surface, it doesn’t have much surface area to dissipate heat and reduce the chance of damage from overheating with a constant duty cycle. A common solution is to run them at lower voltages, but with this being a 5V unit you don’t have much wiggle room in that regard before the performance drops off a cliff, unfortunately. I’d say that the message in the product description of the actual usable strength being about 80% of the advertised 18kg seems about right for most applications.The price is a bit higher than I'd like, but tolerable enough if you need an electromagnet for a project on short notice. Though you can certainly get them cheaper in this specific size and rating and they’re much closer to £3-4 if you order them from the right places.

A well priced electro magnet for small DIY projects.Its quite powerfuk in use and in my application it holds a 2kg items for 5 seconds before dropping it and it works well for that purpose.I wouldnt use it at the rated 10kg as for one i dont think it will manage it and two itll start to get hot especially if used fro extended periods, id say this magnets effeciency would drop with more than 5kg on it , possibly a little less. Its best for holidng for short periods.For the money its great for small projects or R&D .Update- unfortunately after a few days of use the holding force has dropped to right off. It’s possible I have a faulty one or these are not very good in general .
