Not one of the compasses points North. I tried it in multiple locations to make sure and also let several other people try to make sure I'm not magnetic. This compass will only get you more lost.Now onto the blanket: It's like a thin sleeping bag with no zipper. If you'd had one of those emergency blankets, think of this as two of them glued together. This would get you alive, but not comfortable. You would not get a good night's sleep using this. I did poke holes in the bottom to see if it would tear while I tried to fold it back up. It did not tear but I gave up trying to fold it back into the bag. These are small and I will be keeping it in my car for emergencies. I'll also take it hiking and camping for the same reason (the compass is already in the trash).

They give you a reusable sack as if you are going to re-use this, but I think that's almost dishonest in implying that this is meant to be a re-usable blanket. I tip my hat to the man or woman that is able to roll this back up and put it back into the sack. That is to say, I don't think anyone is going to because it's nigh impossible. I undid mine, put it over me to test it out, and put in a good effort to fold it back up and get it back in. Nope. And this is in a controlled environment on my living room floor with no wind or dirt. I even compromised and poked a few pin holes to try to squeeze air out. You will not get this back in the bag.So with that in mind, this is a one-time-use emergency blanket.It did reflect a lot of my body warmth. It's light. It will get holes easily though.I am going my remaining ones in my cars for emergency use.

So my assessment is that these are essentially big plastic bags. A bivy, short for bivouac, is any kind of lightweight temporary shelter or sleeping bag. Could be made of anything I guess. These would work well to retain heat over a sleeping bag, and I suppose if they were all you had they would do. They fold up super tiny and are very thin, but human sized garbage bags might also do, in a super pinch. There is a suffocation warning on them for children, so consider that. It’s cool that each comes with an accurate compass, I like that. And these would be easy to pack to take anywhere, but I got them thinking of that severe cold snap in Houston a couple years back where the power was out for like a week and a bunch of people died. If we are sheltering in place from the cold, this is something I assume I could fold or cinch around blankets or sleeping bags and retain heat that way so that we could at least get some rest and a break from the cold.
