Freud, Pasión Secreta

My father was a psychiatrist, so I grew up respecting Freud while very aware of the failures and rigidities inherent in his method. This sparked a lifelong interest on Freud in me, though from a historical perspective rather than as a practitioner. I have read many histories of the period and about all the other theories that his ideas spawned.This is an absolutely beautiful dramatization of Freud's greatest period of discovery, when he resisted the prestigious medical establishment in Vienna to forge ahead with his radical theories. Not only does the film outline the process of scientific discovery, but it presents the basic ideas lucidly and with surprising historical accuracy, given the compromises needed to form a Hollywood narrative. This is an extraordinary accomplishment, in my opinion.Through wonderfully dramatic case studies, we experience Freud's development of an new approach to hysteria (that it exists and can be dealt with through hypnosis, involving the re-experiencing of the original trauma and thereby eliminating it for good); the founding of the theory of sexual neurosis (obviously questionable with what we now know with subsequent science) as the principal basis of psychological trauma; the discovery that dreams and free association can lead to communication with the unconscious mind; and finally, the working out of how this should work therapeutically. Freud explores not just the pathologies of his patients, but his own neuroses, all the while managing his professional and personal relationships. In my opinion, it is a brilliant success as a drama and an informative documentary - it does not unacceptably over-simplify or transmogrify, but portrays Freud as the brilliant humanist and healer that he was.This is a pioneering film, I have never seen anything like it as means to transmit ideas. Recommended with enthusiasm.

Dommage qu'Amazon ne rectifie pas; car effectivement ce DVD n'est qu'en version anglaise sous-titrée français. Un point c'est tout, aucune version française. Quelle surprise, et quelle déception alors que je n'avais pas lu les commentaires, de chercher une version qui n'existait pas.La déception fut de courte durée, car l'excellence du scénario et le jeu impeccable des acteurs m'ont vite fait oublier que je le regardais en version originale. Lorsque l'on essaye de comprendre Freud et sa théorie, ce qui n'est pas toujours chose aisée pour un profane à le lire, ce film est un révélateur de sa démarche.Si le personnage de Freud vous intéresse, je vous conseille la vision de ce film...

Dieser Film, Biographie der jungen Jahre, über den berühmten Arzt Dr. Sigmund Freud ist sehr gelungen! Der Hauptdarsteller Clift spielt Freud sehr gut und überzeugend, die restlichen Schauspieler bieten auch eine sehr gute Darstellung und die Regie ist ausgezeichnet! Spannend und sehr informativ ist dieser Film! Auch die authentischen Orte "des alten Wien" sind schön zu sehen! Insgesamt ein sehr spannender und interessanter Film, Biographie - Jugend Dr.Freuds, mit wertvollen Informationen zur Arbeit dieses berühmten Psychoanalytikers in Wien Ende des 19.Jhdt/Anfang des 20 Jhdt. und ausgezeichneten Schauspielern, wie Clift! ( in englischer Sprache! )
