This product took me about two and half hours to assemble and the assembly was not straightforward with the tools provided. Thankfully I've been doing DIY for decades and have some decent tools to hand, but even then you're contending with parts that don't fit together very easily, misalignments and a general sense of having 'bodged' the thing together instead of assembled it in a satisfying manner. The manufacturer tries to cover themselves by stating that, 'It takes some time to assemble the product. If you mind, you can decide whether to buy it.'Given the materials involved in its manufacture this is the kind of cop out you'd reasonably expect for a product at half the current roughly £50 asking price i.e. It's reasonable to sell a product that takes hours of self-assembly if the manufacturer's savings are passed onto the customer. Then the question would be, 'how much is your time worth to you?'But in this case the product combines being absurdly expensive for what it is, with requiring 2+ hours of your time before it can be used. Then of course, assuming you don't just throw it away, you then have to try to store something covered in spikes until the next time you need it - unless you want to factor in another couple of hours to take the thing apart again! One thing to note is that unless your lawn is really wet and soft you are going to have great difficulty in getting these spikes to penetrate no matter how much extra weight (sand or gravel) you add. So in my lawn this is really only possible after days of heavy rain.By contrast the kind of aerator you stand on at least allows you to put your whole weight into it and the 'plugs' you expel can be disposed of or composted, and represent soil you've effectively removed. This is really important in the case of heavily compacted soil like mine, since you want to create space and let the air get in.So in conclusion if you're sure you really need a spike type lawn aerator then do yourself a huge favour and buy one already assembled.

After seeing the lawn looking a bit worse for wear (thanks to a wet winter, a baby’s paddling pool, and a very energetic dog), I decided it was time to give it a proper aerating. Grabbed this roller, and it’s been spot on.The aerator comes with 39 sturdy spikes and a detachable handle that adjusts from 50" to 70", which is brilliant if you’re tall like me and sick of hunching over every garden tool. It’s heavy-duty enough to dig into the soil nicely without having to stamp down or swear at it — though it does give you a bit of a workout pushing it around, I’m not going to lie.Took a bit of patience getting the handle together (lots of pieces, but not difficult if you take your time), and once assembled, it’s rock solid. The spikes really help open up the lawn, letting air, water, and nutrients get in properly. You can actually see the grass perking up after a few days.Pros:Solid, heavy-duty build — feels like it’ll lastAdjustable handle for taller or shorter usersSpikes really dig in and do the job properlyGood size — covers a decent area quicklyIdeal for bringing tired lawns back to lifeCons:Takes a bit of effort to push, especially on harder groundAssembly takes a little patience, but nothing too tricky

After a bit of fiddly assembly, I got this aerator to work and it works wonders. It comes in this individual parts which are quite light and also they’re quite light when they’re put together so it’s quite an easy product to handle when it’s fully fitted together. The build quality is quite robust, but the handle does feel a little bit flimsy purely because it’s one of those screw on extendable handlesIt comes with a canvas Steve in which you can put sand or rocks, whatever you want and it’s lots into the barrel. What this does is it weighs it down when you’re using it and therefore you get a deeper penetration of the nails.Using it is more effective walking forwards and pulling it behind you rather than walking forwards and pushing it in front of you. Even with the sandbag full, the nail penetrates into the ground about one to 2 inches which is actually quite good.It rolls nicely and all the past function correctly so I’m happy with this, but I’m yet to see any results. I’ve only just got the machine and have walked around the garden and it is a large garden so I took awhile.Good value for money for the type of product this is

If I had wanted a job on an assembly line I would have worked in a factory! Why is it that for the convenience of the manufacturer, us non factory workers are expected to assemble items we buy. This was by far the worst experience of having to put together an item. The instructions were completely useless. Pictures blurry and illegible. Holes didn't line up properly. Had to install every spike using a spanner and small socket. One spike wouldn't tighten. I'm not an idiot. I've assembled and fitted a complete kitchen. I've redesigned and fitted my own bathroom, plumbing included. So, if you've got something better to do with about 2 hours of your time, I suggest buying a spike roller already made up.

I have struggled to award this item a higher review than 3 stars on the basis that whilst I can appreciate that the manufacturer and shipper have to maximise the quantity of items which they can fit in a shipping container, at £48.99 as at the date of review, there is a considerable amount of assembly required to fully construct the tool. Assemblng the handle was simple enough to undertake and realistically is all that should reasonably be required, but to insert and tighten 39 tines takes quite a bit of time.A quick search of the internet revealed that there are a number of competitors which offer these type of item already assembled and these can be purcashed for a lower price; I found one item on Amazon which is slightly smaller but comes with the roller having spikes already fixed in place and more importantly was highly recommended by Gardener's World in their top ten aerators for 2025 - it was also cheaper than this item.In operation, this tool will aerate your lawn and is useful for ensuring nutrients and oxygen penetrate your soil, however, whilst I have added this item to my collection of garden tools, I do feel that there are better quality items around for very little more and most of those require less effort to assemble. In summary, it takes time and is not easy to assemble, I don't feel that it represents particularly good value for money and whilst it does function quite well, I cannot endorse it.4 stars for effectiveness in use, 2 stars for the requirement to effectively build this item from scratch - three overall.
