First I tried my luck with the equivalent SmallRig product and ended up sending it back as it relied on friction only and failed to hold up my heavy 7" on-camera monitor. It just didn't work. So I was suspicious that this one would have the same flaw. What I did not expect is that the joint of this HangTon monitor mount has tiny teeth and functions almost like a miniature Arri rosette. The thumb wheel needs just minor tightening to keep the monitor at any desired angle. I wish the monitor side of the device had a quick release mechanism but in practice the extra time spent on tightening the luxuriously large thumb wheels is negligible in compared to a quick release buckle. Now what I did not see coming is that both captive thumbwheels are seated in a slit rather than a circular hole. This means that the distance between the screw and the locating pin on the connecting device can vary a little bit. Not all mounting holes with locating pin are machined to the same specs and tolerances and an overly tight fit can be frustrating/prohibitive. This ingenious little sleight of hand makes it a thing of the past. It just fits no matter what brand. Next I have to try and see if the lateral tolerance is big enough to accommodate SmallHD monitor mounting holes which come with their own infuriating specs that are just a little off and need special, often quite pricy adapters. Obviously the locating pins can be removed in which case they included a rubber washer that will limit accidental rotation. The overall production quality and the smooth finishing of the HangTon monitor mount is tip top. I am really impressed by this little fella.
