The quality is very good for the price. This one was sub-£5 so I wasn't expecting much to be honest and I was actually impressed with the build quality.The frame around the heating plate appears to be plastic with a quite nice wood effect on it and the underside has a felt pad so it won't scratch the surface it sits on.The cord is approximately 1M long and was just long enough to go from my computer desk to the PC tower sitting on the floor underneath it. Anything further away and you will need a M/F USB extension cable.When it arrived, it appeared to be dead. I plugged it into the USB port on the front of my PC and the heating plate was still stone cold 10 minutes later. The same port was tested with a mouse and worked fine. I then plugged it into a 4-way USB block connected to the back of my PC and still nothing.As a final test I plugged it into one of my 5V USB charging adaptors and voila! the heating plate got hot! So if you get one of these and it seems dead when plugged into your PC or laptop, try your phone charger before you send it back as faulty...The down side is that it didn't actually keep my coffee warm - even when tested during an unusual (for the UK) heatwave!The problem was that all of my mugs have the wrong type of bottom!To get maximum contact for heating, you need to use a mug with a totally flat bottom and unfortunately most mugs/cups have a raised 'ring' resulting in only a tiny bit of the mug actually being in contact with the heating plate.As you can see from the image, only the light coloured part of the mug base touches the heating plate so I can't yet say whether it works well or not - hence only 2 stars for the time being.What's more, I think I can safely say that this problem is also going to be present with all of the devices like this - regardless of price.Also, being so cheap, it has no switch on it so when not in use you have to disconnect the USB cord.Spending a bit more money will get you more features like an LCD temerature display or auto-turning off when there is no mug on the heating plate, but I suspect that even those will not work if your mug/cup doesn't have a totally flat bottom!I'm going to buy a 'flat bottomed' mug and will report back after trying one of those!

This only allows cups to be placed on and is too small for mugs. There is no on/off button on it, basically when it’s plugged in, it’s on and this is no use when the USB port is under the desk. Have to climb under the desk to turn it on and off. Not useful at all for its purpose. Now used as a stand.
