This is a run of the mill inductive proximity sensor used for determining when the sensor is up against a metal object. It's often used in industrial automation or in other similar sensing applications. This particular sensor is wired as PNP, meaning the output is either open circuit or out=VCC; if you use this with a microcontroller you may need a pulldown resistor. There's a red LED on the end of the sensor that can be used for diagnostics, which is particularly helpful for troubleshooting and installation; I also appreciate a wiring diagram is presented on the side of the sensor.I've used a number of these blue-colored inductive and magnetic proximity sensors and they're all roughly equivalent for me; they all seem to do a reasonable job of sensing and are easy to work with, with a threaded body that allows you to fine tune the height adjustment. I wouldn't necessarily count on the properties of this to be equivalent to any specific other sensor you already see in use, since various models with different trigger thresholds are available - but if you're designing your own system, this is a perfectly reasonable building block to start with.
