I use this hammer in my kitchen with an ice pick to break up ice that is too large in my thermos.I make ice cubes in a silicone brownie tin that fits in my thermos mug, but sometimes the cubes are too large together, and the straw doesn’t fit.So I pull out my ice pick & hammer, and begin whacking away at the cubes, which are laying flat in the mug thermos.This hammer gives just enough force to break up the cubes without breaking my hand or puncturing a hole in my thermos mug if I miss or hit too hard.I’ve had this hammer for a while, and it’s still going strong.If you are accustomed to using rubber mallets, don’t be fooled. Both the black side of the hammer and red side of the hammer are plastic. The ad says the red side is rubber, but my fingernails can dig into rubber. It may have a very small percentage of rubber in the plastic to absorb the shock of blunt force, and to prevent the plastic from cracking, because it doesn’t feel like cheap plastic.The heads can be unscrewed to be removed if they become damaged, but I don’t see where you can purchase replacement heads.The handle of this hammer feels plastic with a tiny bit of rubber. Hammers usually have rubber handles to absorb the vibrations of the strikes, but with a hammer this small, I doubt the user would develop dupuytren’s without thick rubber on this hammer…not from the light tapping for which this hammer was designed.The base of the hammer, itself, and of each head are made of ferrous stainless steel, and I am impressed with that.In the section where the stem of the hammer meets the head of the hammer is a very sharp point that feels like it can cut the user, if they aren’t careful. Originally I thought this was poor craftsmanship, or extra spillage of metal when welding the head to the stem. But when I pulled out my camera’s magnifier, I discovered that it appears to be a very tiny screw. So they placed a black ring around the stem of the hammer just under the hammer head. I didn’t even know that sharp point existed until I pulled away the ring to examine the connection for this review.The hammer head is soundly attached to the stem, and it hasn’t loosened since I have been using this hammer (incidentally, my Google research indicates that this tool is called a “lineman’s hammer”).So it doesn’t have a rubber head as indicated in the description. If this is a dealbreaker, you will not be satisfied. But I like this tool because it is both lightweight and durable. The design allows for easy yet thorough cleaning, an important feature in kitchen use.
