HOUSON Bicycle Torque Wrench, 10-20 Nm TorqueThis 6mm socket torque wrench set comes with 5 hexagon (Allen) bits: H3, H4, H5, H6, H8; and 1 Torx T25bit. Any additional 6mm drive bit will fit. This is an ideal inexpensive torque wrench for bicycle maintenance, of a torque capacity and size to fit most of the smaller torque-specified fasteners on a modern bicycle . Stem bolts, seat tube binder, rim brake pivots, derailleur fasteners, integrated brake gear levers, bottle cage bolts, rack and mudguard mounts etc. It isn’t highly enough rated for the heavier duty crank, axle and pedal fasteners. In truth the torque wrench is most useful to avoid overtightening in alloy and carbon frames rather than for heavy duty tightening. The wrench is ONLY meant for tightening and should only ever be loaded clockwise to ensure the scale stays reasonably accurate (so loosen fasteners with a simple wrench or Allen key rather than this one). After a while using this kind of wrench you develop a good feel for the sort of forces your attachments expect of you for the days you don’t have this available. The torque is read by simply watching the deflection of the handle as you tighten the fastener relative to the printed scale that doesn’t move with the handle. The word “POINTER” is printed on the handle and that’s where you read against the scale. In practice this is simple and accurate enough for bicycle maintenance, and without calibration it means you can at least tighten multiple fasteners consistently, which is important for carbon stems, for instance. There are no clicks or clutches involved, just your eyeball. At this price every serious cyclist should have one.

I have done quite a few roadside repairs while riding, from adjusting brakes to tightening head tube bolts, or customizing shift points. I usually just wing it when tightening down screws or bolts, which hasn't always worked out well for me as I have stripped a hex screw here and there. After either drilling them out or hammering a bigger bit into it, I have realized that not every screw needs to be gorilla torque tight. This wrench should make it much easier and safer. This wrench packs small and all the bits conveniently fit into the holder, which fits on to the wrench. The overall package fits easily into my seat bag. I am pretty stoked to have this customized tool on board for my next adventure.

For the price and purpose this works well but because it's a mostly-plastic deflection type torque wrench, it may not be accurate at all in situations where you don't have very clean turning nuts or bolts. I was not able to measure against a known wrench so assuming the deflection is accurate. It also has a very narrow torque band so is really only useful for specific bike and similar purposes exactly in the 10 - 20nm range. If you need something more versatile, I would definitely look for a small digital wrench with a wider range. It's also fairly large so would not be something I take on a ride, but generally if I'm fixing something on a ride, I'm not torquing to spec, so not really an issue as far as I'm concerned.
