I purchased this internet radio at the beginning of May 2023. Despite having a mesh Wi-Fi point less than two meters away from the radio, it frequently loses connection. Additionally, the clock resets itself, which causes problems in the morning. With the knowledge I have now, I would not buy this alarm clock/radio again.

UPDATE 12.10.24: Still working ok. I've changed my router to an ASUS model running of 2.4Ghz (which I switch off at night via a remote mains plug from my bed... I don't want my head irradiated all night!). Certain stations still seem to drop out, like LBC, but GB News, TALK (ok, maybe not everyone's choice, I understand: But they help go to sleep!). Overall, the system works, but IT IS SLOW in response to the remote. The SLEEP TIMER is still too SMALL to see WHAT YOU'VE SET, I've learnt 3 presses for 60 mins'. But I cannot see why the display does not switch temporarily to a larger 'minute' setting display for the display timer. This unit is most probably in the kitchen or bedroom. I know I'd like an easier to set timer shutdown. OK, aside from my groans about that. I still DO NOT like that the SPEAKER GRILL IS CLOTH, WHY? Surely a METAL GRID would be better? We hoover the bedroom once a week & lifting the radio from my bedside table requires some DELICATE HANDLING not to damage the CLOTH ON THE SPEAKER. Who is still USING CLOTH ON SPEAKERS IN 2023? A METAL GRID, like most of my other radios would be a more durable choice. Aside from the above, THE USB UNPUT OPTION is great, YES, YOU NEED TO LEARN THE REMOTE, but at least you can play back an alternate bedtime story or something of your choice. I do record most voice in MP3 at 128Kbps (quality on voice only is not such a big thing) & though slow, it is possible to set your story playing, set the timer (with a squint at the little display at the top) & then cover the bright display (with a sunglasses cloth in my case!) & drift off! This is NOT A BAD UNIT, it JUSTNEEDS SOME DESIGN TWEAKS TO MAKE IT EXCELLENT. OK, all for now, hope this helps other owners in the interim. Thanks for reading my observations, take care all.UPDATE 28.1.24: All working ok so far I am pleased to say.I do have some stations like LBC London drop out after 20 minutes or so sometimes, but this does not appear to happen with any other station I've listened to so far. I've purposely left the radio running all day, switching between some programmed favorites every 2hrs or so; mainly because, going to sleep is when I'd have this on... & I'm normally asleep within a 2hr period! :-)Also this occurs mostly when I've laid down in bed to sleep at night, so my body might be attenuating the router signal or something; though it still does not drop out on other station, curious? So more broadly speaking, station 'cut-outs/disconnects' mentioned in some other reviews appear a bit subjective really, possibly local router or coverage issues(?), to me because in general I am not finding this an issue. I notice that those customers experiencing this are not in the UK & I have selected stations in Germany & France without disconnect or signal loss. The dimmer button does not appear to much just be pressing it, it does not bring the brightness up to a pre-determined level, or for that matter dim it either - back to the manual I think!I have found that if you press the OK button during the night, it will bring the display up to a readable level from zero, then make a selection & within about 15/20 secs' the display will drop back down to the dim level you programmed in the 'Setting's (cogs icon, menu). (which is where mine is programmed for).YES, THE CLOCK IS STILL A BIT BRIGHT even with the dimmer at night - BUT, I've draped a small black cloth over the display with a little ornament on top to hold it in place. This allows me to flip the cloth up, make a station change etc., but if you've programmed your stations & remembered what numbers, then you could leave the cloth down (making sure not to obstruct the IR sensor above the Vol' knob.So when your radio switches of (sleep timer is great BUT I'd LIKE TO SEE A FULL SIZE DISPLAY OF THE TIME I'M SETTING: The digits are too small to read easily on the top bar of info' on the screen).I also selected MONOCHROME IN settings, as this leaves the station logo in colour (although whose looking at that when your going to sleep? - Shame there isn't an option to have the display show THE STATION BY NAME ONLY WITHOUT THE COLOURED THUMNAIL): but the menu bar above the thumbnail reverses the text to white on a grey background which does HELP REDUCE NIGHTIME GLARE A LITTLE MORE.The black cloth over the display is the simplest solution; I have a separate digital clock & I do not watch the optional weather display: the variable with the weather white clouds icon is too bright at night. The REMOTE MAKES THIS PRODUCT I THINK, as if you've got the new black one, it is nicely made & though the legends on the buttons are a bit small, all the major functions are there & I've already learnt my way around the most important buttons to me personally in a braille style learning process. The only other new bit of fun has been taking recordings directly from the LINE-OUT SOCKET around the back, this is great for digitally recording & keeping something special to you.I have used my Zoom H1n plugged into this on a standard male to male 3.5mm 1m cable. Yes it does work, but I find some stations either quite over-modulated (even after reducing my recorder to '1' record level. Some stations are better than others.THOUGH, I AM NOT SURE IF THE LINE-OUT IS GENUAINLY 'BALACNED' & DISTORTION CREEPS IN SOMETIMES, bearing in mind the use of the line-out cuts the volume on the unit; & I did try reducing the unit volume to zero to see if this made any impact on the line-out (it shouldn't of course).I know this is minor point; many people will never use this for this purpose; I might be getting some unidentified feedback or something. The line-out is great to connect to a larger external speaker or Hi-Fi, so full marks for including it in addition to the normal headphone socket (3.5mm), which also works fine I have found, with ear buds or full size headphones, my Philips full-size are 32 Ohm & there doesn't seem to be any driver issues, either at full volume, which is too high to listen to anyway.Ok, all for now, I'll update the the review if I encounter any problems.JUST WISH I'D SPENT THE EXTRA FOR THE BROWN WOOD EFFECT VERSION instead, the black is ok (yes, it's cheaper too!), but I think the brown harps back to the 1970's style Hi-Fi & would look more in place for, at least personally.I see the white version is getting hard to get hold of, a more modern look for the kitchen or similar I reckon. Take care all, hope this has helped at least one person! :-)******************************************************************Received yesterday 25.1.24 (plan to update on how I get on with my new 'toy'!).Firstly - Box incredibly dirty... looked like it'd be on a shelf since Noah sailed his ark (I know some people have said He had a problem with the Woodpeckers?)! Ok, cleaned that off, it might have been the last of the few... or 'the first of many' as someone famously once said I think!? Though you can't compare a Spitfire to this!Jokes aside, this is heavy, WELL MADE (for the price) & I'd now have preferred the 1970's brown walnut style finish or the white, but I've the black. So if you're fussy, I really do think the brown or white will look better in any environment. My lot is the black, so what's next...BUT, what remote do you get? I was lucky enough to get the new model, black, with central directional arrows, yet the image portrays a rather cheap looking silvery remote with soft key buttons still for some reason (I am assuming that most, or not all, models now come with this newer better made remote, but I cannot confirm that)..I think if you like (& remember) that you'll be preferably operating this tech' remotely, then the full hand sized remote is nice, it does have slightly small keys, but overall its still far better that that silvery bubble button thing that still features in most of the images for this product.BUT... my CR2025 battery for the remote was flat... ok, fixed that, I've several other remotes using the same. BUT YOU MIGHT LIKE TO CHECK THIS UPON DELIVERY & APPROACH THE COMAPNY Deutsch TELSTAR for a replacement... I have.ALSO & MORE IMPORTANTLY: NO UK 3 PIN PLUG IS PROVIDED! Come on, what are you doing Telstar!? Surely you could include a UK fit plug. I have a Slovakian girlfriend so adaptors for all her stuff are around the house... but for others, THIS WILL BE AN EXTRA PURCHASE TO CONVERT THAT 2 PIN PLUG TO A UK FIT 3 PIN! - This is an oversight I think.I mean who wants a radio to turn up that they're looking forward to plugging in & enjoying all this new cultural range that internet radio provides, only to discover that they've got to go out/or online to find ANOTHER & BUY ANOTHER converter just to get it to powered up!NOT GOOD Customer service for Telstar's UK customers I think?OK, so far I've had it going all the time... actually it smells a bit after 3hrs, but that probably manufacturing plastics & other 'things' heating up after first use.Principally I'm testing the connection to my wi-fi so far on sustained listening sessions. It all connects up easily (& I'm not going into that as the screen on the device is very informative about the steps required to get connected). The features are broad & though I thought the weather display options in Standby mode seemed novel initially, I've now turned them off. I've also reduce to the 'dimmer' to less than zero/the lowest, as the display is still a little bright at 2am in a dark room. These are basic moans though, for most all of that is not relevant to the quality.Yes, it connects easily & I do note that other users have complained above loss of connection.I have that YES, IT DOES CUT OUT AFTER 15 minutes or so on some stations BUT NOT ALL. I've tried a variety of tests since yesterday & have found that some stations run for hours with no problem. So these issues other reviewers report must be either a localised router/internet signal issue or actually the station broadcast itself?Overall, so far, ok'ish... I'm still a bit apprehensive that'll it'll start 'playing up' & letting me... but I've also used the external USB input with MP3 files up to 320Kbps & they all play ok.I think the main think here is to allow it time to catch up with your button presses on the remote... it is certainly a little slow. The overall sound quality though is really good (there are some equalizer options... I leave it on 'Flat'), not overtly loud, but loud enough & at low volumes at night the stepped volume control is able to provide some soft but not too jumpy steps up & down.I like the fact that the remote has a SLEEP button on it & though not primarily located, it is easy to learn where it is with eyes shut....well, I'll leave it there for now. BUT DO CHECK THOSE CR2025 Batteries that come with the remote, mine were most definitely flat! :-)I MAY STAND CORRECTED BY NEXT WEEK on all of this enthusiasm of course!
