I had to replace one of these on my garage door that kept erroring and it's so easy to stick on there, pop the id # into the ismartgate app and all of a sudden the HomeKit setup all fell into place. The first one lasted several years; I think I messed it up when I switched the batteries or it just died of old age but the replacement is working like a charm.

To be fair, when the ismartgate device works, its works well. I love the ability to automate this device with my other devices in Apple Homekit. The problem is how the sensor is manufactured. It is battery operated and instead of a utilizing a commonly found battery size, it requires the stubby "N" size which clip onto the circuit board with clips that tightly hold the batteries in place as the sensor needs to ride up and down with the garage door each time it is opened or closed. The packaging says the battery life is 1.5 years. This is laughable. In my 2-years experience with this product, the batteries need to be replaced every 6-8 weeks depending on the weather conditions. So frequent battery changes are required and this product is in no way robust enough to handle this. The reason I has to buy this sensor was due to the clip breaking off. With this new sensor, I dropped in the batteries that came with the unit and when it would not connect, my first attempt at troubleshooting was to change the batteries. Remember, this brand new sensor right out of the box...and when pulling out the first battery, the clip immediately separates from the circuit board. You can see how fragile the whole thing is from the pictures. If you have already bought the ismartgate, beware the battery changes will be tenuous. If you are shopping for new automated garage door opener, save yourself from this quagmire and look elsewhere.

The batteries are installed into the wireless sensor via two sets of clips. These clips are one complete metal part to their positive or negative terminal counterparts. When installing the battery, it is very likely that the metal will score the battery enough so that the positive and negative ends of the battery short itself out. This will very, very quickly result in the battery getting critically hot-- hot enough to burn you or start a fire. If you catch this, you have mere seconds to get the batteries out of the device before things get out of hand. This is an absolutely terrible and unsafe design. The leads should be completely isolated from the battery clips. This is sheer engineering laziness and cost-savings measures and someone is going to get hurt or killed because of this.I emailed the support people at ismartgate and my email was ignored for a week. Clearly they do not care about this. I have since reported this product to the CPSC.
