Productdetails

I used 2 of these to secure the plumbing access panel at the front of our master bath jacuzzi. It took me awhile to figure out why the latching mechanism wouldn't catch when I mounted it on the left side of a 2x4" board that is part of the front frame surrounding the jacuzzi but works when mounted to the rigth side. It worked fine when not mounted but not when mounted. I took one apart to see how it operates. There is a plastic round piece that rotates in a hole in one side of the housing. The other end of the piece has a X shape that catches on the frame when latched in place. There is just enough play where the X shape was falling away from the catch on the frame. When I mounted it on the right side, it would fall towards the catch and engage every time. It has a fairly narrow caulk width, so without the caulk the gap around the access panel is not that noticable and makes for quick access if ever needed.

These didn't work well for my application because the throw and spring tension didnt match well with my sof close mechanisms. I'm wanting these as a push to open mechanism (PTOM) for the pocket doors in my house, which are equipped with soft open and close mechanisms (SOCM).Ideally the pocket door could be slid open at the lowest speed possible, hit the PTOM, and the SOCM would carry the door all the way into the pocket, latching the PTOM into the closed position. If you know anything about springs and soft close mechanisms, you should see the paradox here. The springs in the PTOM need to be soft enough that the SOCM can fully retract and latch the PTOM, but then they need to be stiff enough to overcome the SOCM when you push in and release the PTOM. As far as I know this is physically impossible. However, there is at least one YouTube video (he used these units) that says this capability exists in Canada or Europe or maybe both...no clue how you can do it though because the PTOM needs to have a weaker spring than the SOCM upon opening the door (closing the PTOM), but a stronger spring upon closing the pocket door (releasing the PTOM).The other thing you need to look out for is having the correct throw. If the throw is too long, the SOCM will not "grab" the door before it hits the PTOM. This will cause the door to bounce off the PTOM. Unless you use the magnets maybe. I didn't because the SOCM should hold the door into the PTOM and the magnets would make it unnecessarily more difficult to pull out of the pocket. On the other side, if the throw is too short, the door won't come out of the pocket far enough to grab. The ideal throw would allow the SOCM to just barely grab before hitting the PTOM, and then when releasing PTOM it would be able to just barely escape the clutches of the SOCM.In the end physics still wins and this unit was simply not a good match for my SOCMs.I give these three stars because they are nice units but not working for my application. But apparently (according to a statement on YouTube, i could find 0 examples though) Canada and Europe has exactly what I need but nobody sells it in the states and I'm trying to encourage getting them here.Ultimately someone should sell a PTOM with a matching SOCM that are designed to work as I described above. But since, throw and spring force both need to be matched, a single manufacturer would probably be the only one who could make it work perfectly, if it's possible. Or a unit with tuneable spring tension and throw may be the best option, but then it would probably cost a lot more and i didn't see any like that. However these can easily be opened up and you can change the spring and maybe even the throw somehow. I really wanted to try the "EZ OPEN" PTOM. but at $45 a pop, I wasnt willing to experiment with that kind of money.I ended up going with a 3-4" long round unit that was, less expensive, much easier to install and has much better throw for my application than these ones.

Plastic made very poorly. Says heavy duty in description. Not my idea of heavy duty. Holds light weight door somewhat securely with 3 of them. Good for small projects I suppose. Not large solid wood construction
