Steamforged Games has a great 5E Dungeons and Dragons setting called Animal Adventures. The miniatures are freaking adorable! And these are no exception. Well sculpted and highly detailed!

This is a great set of 6 minis, great for your ttrpg session or even just for a cat loving painter.I picked these up just to paint and I'm not disappointed, steamforged really know how to produce a lovely quality mini, they're small but the sculpt details are crisp and recognizable. The 6 characters you get are adorable and have great personality.

This is a review for both volume 1 and volume 2 of Cats and Catacombs as there isn't much difference between the pair in terms of quality.Generally, these are brilliant little miniatures with various breeds of cats themed around 12 of the base classes represented in DnD 5e (minus the more recent Artificer), as well as various other table top games these figures could easily fit in to.The detail on them is great and easily distinguishable. Generally I have a lot more difficulty with miniatures when it comes to working out what some of the smaller details are supposed to be but I mostly didn't have this issue with the 12 felines. After finishing a good handful of them, they look absolutely brilliant and I can't wait to get them on the table in front of a group so that they can stroke my ego about my cool cat minis. There's not much to say in terms of positives given they're exactly what you see and want; cat minis for table top games. But this is a four star review, so my very VERY minor negatives.(this doesn't effect my score) There isn't much reference material to use when you do run into a bit of difficulty trying to distinguish details or even if you need a bit of inspiration. Internet aside (as that requires customers to post their work), a small leaflet or something inside the box showing a painted example of each would have been nice. There are some artist renderings on the boxes but not all the classes are there and the rendering isn't 100% accurate to the miniature.I may upload my finished attempts when I've gotten through all 12 to add to the small amount of references out there!(again, does not effect my score) A couple of them aren't instantly recognisable as the class they're supposed to be, at least in my opinion. Currently I have the Mage and the Cleric mid project and whilst I love their models to bits, I wouldn't necessarily identify them as those classes without prior knowledge. In fact, I've gone out and bought some basing materials specifically to make these minis more recognisable as to what they are (and because they're so nice, they deserve an extra bit of pizazz!). The paint job you choose will obviously have a hand in making them more recognisable as well as what you do with their base, but whilst the Barbarian, Bard and Paladin are instantly recognisable as their respective classes right out of the box, a couple are a bit more open for interpretation. And finally, my main complaint which is why I only gave it a 4/5: they come attached to bases for some reason. This is very much a personal gripe. I like to have my miniatures on uniform bases wherever possible which I obviously understand at this point requires a lot of debasing from time to time. I don't usually let it effect a score I give since it's so common. The issue I have here is that they're prefixed to small naff bases via little clips, which SHOULD in theory make them incredibly easy to debase...In theory. In practice however they're for some bizarre reason either glued in or the slots are an extremely tight fit which made them incredibly difficult for me to debase through a mixture of brute force, a craft knife and needlenose grips. Given that many of them are affixed on very small areas of the miniature (little tiny cat legs) was the biggest concern as I didn't want to snap them with force nor deform the feet or legs with tools, others being fixed via a larger area which reduced my worry for snapping them and instead made me realise I need to get to the gym and buff up because they're REALLY stuck on there.Again, my main gripe here that makes me take this into consideration over a miniature where the nasty little base is literally part of the miniature is that this shouldn't have been any harder than just popping them off their bases as it looks like they were designed to do. They didn't need to be glued in by standard, that could be left entirely up to the customer as in this hobby, they probably have a bit of glue hanging around. In terms of my results in getting them off their bases, I spent a good hour or two carefully going at it and I did get them off. I had minor deformation on only 2 of their little tootsies and the Paladin cat suffered a slight fracture on the back of his leg that will require some green stuff to smooth out (as the missing piece is stuck in the base slot...) but generally, it's possible to get them all off unscathed, just far more difficult than it should be.Ultimately though, I'm super happy with these miniatures and extremely happy with the results I've gotten from the couple I've started on. I feel it's a rare case where I'll finish the entire set of minis rather than doing a couple and adding the rest to the pile of shame. I'll definitely be giving their Dungeons and Doggies line a good look next!
