My son loves this chess set. It was value for money and very practical for use in the car or anywhere. It packs away so neatly and is easy to transport. It has helped make chess a ‘go-to’ game for all our children!

After quickly catching on to checkers, my 6.5yo expressed an interest in learning how to play chess. I resisted the temptation to buy a novelty set (the Jurassic Park one was particularly tempting) - he needs to know the standard chess pieces and Kings, Queens, Knights and Castles are cool enough!I liked the idea of it being magnetic, to help prevent accidental toppling, but I decided against a cheaper, smaller portable set - I wanted him to really be able to see the board and the pieces. This set is perfect. I don't know if there's a "standard" size for chess, but I would think this would be close to it. It's a portable set in terms of design, but it's not small by any means. I would say it's not really meant for travel at all, but it's nice to be able to fold it up and put everything away.When I first picked up the bag of pieces I was disappointed with the weight - they felt a little light, but on the board with the magnet, they actually have a nice, natural feel, as does the finish. They're not super detailed, but they do the trick. If I could change one thing it would be for the pieces to be a bit more interesting, but for the price I have no complaints. And it doesn't look cheap by any means - it might not a showpiece, but the difference in quality between it and a, say $25 set is exponential.This was one of those rare buys where I got everything I was hoping for. It's a perfect learner's set, practical, durable and elegant, and I really can't recommend it highly enough for kids. Or even any casual player who just wants to have a decent set around to pull off the shelf and put away.

I bought the large size version of this chess board. If I'm not mistaken, it is slightly smaller than the official tournament size but it is the right size for me. It is neither too big nor too small. A chess board that is too big will require a lot of space. On the contrary, a chess board that is too small may diminish your enjoyment of the game (in my opinion) because it will be harder to see and move the pieces (depending on your eyesight and size of your fingers).The magnets are strong enough to hold the pieces but not too strong that it takes effort to move the pieces. However, I've noted that the magnet on one piece (a queen) on the board I received is slightly weaker than the other pieces. I say that because when I tried to tilt the board, all the pieces did not move except for that queen. The queen did not fall down but it moved slightly. It's not a big deal for me though because it will not move when the chess board is placed on a flat table.I also noted that the black and white chess pieces were stored in separate plastic pouches. It is a nice touch because the pouches keep the pieces from moving around during shipping. In addition, the chess board comes with its own box that makes it more convenient for storage purposes. But don't expect too much from the box and pouches. I mentioned them because although they are small details, they work well to serve a specific purpose.Overall, I highly recommend this chess board.
