Screwed the base into a wood deck and this worked great. It appears it will hold up for several years. The base has a hole in it, so water will drain out (make sure the hole is over where the deck boards come together / drain, or drill a hole in the deck). The problem I had with this is the cheap plastic collar to size down the base to your pole size. It kept coming out, and when in, the umbrella pole would shift slightly (base bottom larger than the collared base top). My solution was to cut a 9" piece of 1.5" Schedule 40 PVC, and drill out 2 holes for the thumb screws. This is now very secure and no shifting or lost collar.

I'm not a fan of sand/water bases for umbrellas. They never hold well enough in high winds. This is perfect for my deck. I have it anchored down with bolts. It's sturdy and well made.

I have an umbrella on my outdoor dining table that is only useful about half the time, depending on what the sun is doing. With this base I can move the umbrella to provide shade where I need it. Make sure you bolt it down in solid structure as the wind can put a pretty good load on the umbrella. I have it on the corner of my deck with lag bolts and one carriage bolt through the decking . It is well made and should last forever. Heavy steel with good welds. If you want to mount it in the yard, I think there are better options, but on a deck (or patio) properly anchored, it's a great option.
