Just what I was looking for to use when geli printing. I am afraid I will not be using it provide a grain when painting on wood. I will be using to make marks in mixed media painting.

Dann habe ich den selben Farbton mit weiss und gelb gemischt und als zweite Farbe drüber gemalt. Immer nur kleine Flächen und schnell abgezogen (der blaue gefiel mir am besten).Wunderschönes Ergebnis.Sehr zu empfehlen und wirklich 1000x einfacher als gedacht.

The inspiration for this project came from some beautiful credenzas from West Elm, CB2 and Urban Barn but I wasn't willing to pay thousands of dollars for a cabinet which would mostly serve as merely storage. This was not a quick project by any means, but I still saved a lot of money! I started with an IKEA BESTA cabinet which had a glossy black finish. I scuff sanded it and then painted the whole thing with 2 coats of Zinsser BIN Shellac Primer. Then I painted the cabinet with chalk paint (so it would have a slightly textured finish which came in handy for the next step), mixing various colors to create some variation in the base color (I used: tan/sand, grey and yellow). Once I left that to dry for a few days, I used a paintbrush to apply a generous layer of Varathane Gel Stain, and then used the two red non-roller wood grain tools through the gel stain (I found I was able to create the most "natural" wood texture with these, so each "wood plank" looked unique). I found it was easier to do the wood grain on the doors while on a flat horizontal surface as opposed to hung in place. It's tricky to describe the technique I used but it involved rocking the wood grain tool back and forth while moving it towards myself. If I didn't like how one "plank" looked on the cabinet, I would apply more gel stain and try again. The gel stain takes a while to dry, and should not be disturbed during that time. I let mine dry for about 10 days before I started applying a few coats of oil-based Poly to seal in my masterpiece. I realize I mixed some oil and non-oil based products but since I let them dry adequately between coats I did not run into any issues.Note: I did not come up with this technique. I watched a lot of youtube videos and read a lot of blog posts, searching "wood grain tool" or "faux wood" effect to see various different outcomes and then combined the tools and techniques to create the look I was going for.
