First of all, this film is not a documentary. (Most of reviewers here, who wrote negative opinion about the movie, expected something BBC-type accurate history lesson will see. But their expectation are failed.) That film rather more a brilliantly presented female-led drama, framing by real historical events. Some reviewer wrote "it's long and boring" - I can't agreed with them. I can see in this film, eye-catching Scottish landscapes, historical castles, beautifully designed and crafted costumes. Furthermore, I like Josie Rourke's interesting, detailed storytelling, which concentrate to the two red haired queens' rulings, their personal life and complex feelings. In the title role, Saoirse Ronan delivers sky-high performance. She's majestic, clever, resolute, proud, passionate, and breathtakingly gorgeous. Even brave, when she was forced to fights against malicious, power thirsty men, and the hidden English threat. Not just with words, but also with sword! She triumphs irresistibly and reigns over Scotland in her own right, with unquestionable authority. Beside that, she love wholeheartedly, her subjects, her ladies, her gay courtier and of course, her only child. Beyond that, she almost blindly fell in love to her second husband, and biasedly loved her half-brother, and her monarch cousin, later all will betrays her. In this is Ronan's genius, that she can play a rigorous ruler and a gentle woman in the same role, more than believable way. It’s dazzling!Margot Robbie, in the role Queen Elizabeth of England is truly superb and worthy partner to Ronan. Their common scene the absolute climax of the film. It didn't happen in reality, perhaps that's why it is so touching!Men can only be "second violinists" alongside these two powerful and decided women, but yet, Jack Lowden as Lord Darnley (Mary’s second husband), and Guy Pearce as Elizabeth’s Secretary of State, delivering highly impactful performance.Twenty years after the two queens imaginary meeting, in the reality, Mary Stuart was executed, as an enemy of the English Crown. This is the final scene of the movie, in which Ronan shows shocking dignity, with which she setting up an eternal standing monument of Mary Stuart’s sacrifice. In the leading role of this classic historical tableau, Saoirse Ronan (American-born Irish actress), ascends to the highest grade of her pure stratospheric art.It should finally be mentioned Max Richter's enthralling musical score, which can make some tears, if you're open minded enough to could comprehends this movie's message, and don't use other people's prejudice to make your own judgement.I recommend this movie to everyone those love intelligent classic-costume-dramas, and welcomes wonderful acting of the peerless talent (and her excellent partners), with really spectacular cinematography. A completely sophisticated debut work, from an originally theatrical director.
