We'll start with the TLDR : There's no 4.5 star rating, so it gets a 5-star. Works great if you value the accuracy in your cooking and like to WOW your guests with perfect "unforgiving" protein. 4 sensors might sound like an overkill, but trust me, it is Not! Range is still an issue versus the advertised range in day-to-day usage. The areas of improvement first, because there is really only one, and that is the range. To be fair, that is an issue with all non-wifi wireless thermometers. Bluetooth can be unreliable and the variations in range and consistency in connection will differ from one household to another. Eitherway, I was experiencing connection losses in certain areas of my house even though it's relatively open concept and the smoker was fairly close to the house in the backyard. Surprisingly (compared to other products and to older gen MeatSticks), I had no issues with the oven this time around!Do note I make sure to keep the range extender at a safe but as close as possible distance to the thermometer, generally less than 2 feet away, allowing the range extender to pick-up the signal and "doing it's thing" of extending the signal to my phone. IMO, Wifi is the solution, so looking forward to a reasonably priced wifi + thermometer (it is still a little on the high end at this time). Now the good, and there's a lot of it.The 4 sensors are accurate in my personal usage, that is smoking and roasting. If you're making ribs, a 4-sensor thermometer has little added value. However, as soon as you get into thicker pieces of meat, like a large chicken, turkey, brisket, etc.. you start seeing the value and geta better control over your cook/heat. I honestly learned a thing of two and adjusted by smoking of thicker pieces of protein thanks to the new information pulled by a 3 internal sensors system. I am not your typical "serial spritzer" and like to keep my protein sealed in smoke for as long as possible, especially when temperatures drops as you lose a ton of heat from opening a smoker around or below freezing. The range extender is significantly better than earlier generations, especially when cooking in an oven. The app is simple to use and works and syncs well with the thermometer - set it up and updated the software in 5-minutes or so. It's intuitive and provides you with easy to read data. The various temperature alarms work as expected and have saved a pair of st-louis ribs from a malfunctioning pellet smoker.Value for the money, especially when it goes on sale, is absolutely great, especially when compared to it's main competitor (you know the one...).The 4-sensors setup is the centerpiece of this thermometer. The more the better, right? Well I think this hit the sweet spot and anything beyond that is just marketing doing it's thing. The first two sensors (starting with the tip) will read your protein's internals, these two should be fairly close in temperature during the cook, otherwise you might be cooking at too high of a temp, especially if you have an "unforgiving protein" (think various steak cuts, chicken breasts, etc..).The 3rd sensor will capture the temperature of your protein's outer layer, this one surprised me and confirmed a lot of what I assumed or observed by probing with an instant themometer - this is a big deal as now I have a read on an area I used to only get by opening the smoker (big nono for me) and manually probing. Truth is, in a sense MeatStick set a new standard for myself; I'm not sure I could go back to a dual-sensor (one inner, one outer/ambient) themometer, maybe 3 sensors (probe tip, edge and ambient) but definitely not a single inner sensor.

The Meatstick 4x has the same shape as the original meatstick and operates mostly in the same way. The app was a bit clunky and not intuitive at times when I purchased my first meatstick set. But I quickly became familiar with the UI after one or two cook sessions and in just the past few months I've noticed that the app has gotten some subtle but helpful updates. The 4x took everything I liked about the original stick and improved upon it, the additional sensors seemed somewhat gimmicky when I first heard about it but after trying it out, I have to say it's a phenomenal improvement. I ran it in a brisket and the differences in readings from the 3 sensors really gives you a better idea of what's going on with the cook. I also wanted to try it in some oven baked salmon which was just a little wider than the length of the stick so watching the first and third sensors (outermost points on the filet) climb nearly 20 degrees higher than the second sensor was interesting. The software registers the lowest temperature of the 3 internal sensors as the cook temperature so from a food safety standpoint you don't have to worry about reaching safe temperatures for consumption, the app recommends USDA safe cooking temperatures when you setup the cook and compensates for carryover cooking which is absolutely something that occurs. Everyone in our household agrees that since I started using the meatstick for our meals everything seems "more juicy" turns out everything was just being overcooked as we always erred on the safe side when it came to the food being done. Even when I was using an instant read temperature probe, I didn't compensate for carryover cooking so if I pulled the food when I hit 165 or whatever my target was, I didn't realize that sitting on the counter it continued to rise nearly 10 degrees! With the meatsick you can clearly see it occur on the time/temperature graphs that it saves. Ambient temperature will plummet while all 3 internal temperature sensors continue to march higher for several minutes. There were several times when I started using the stick that it would make recommendations that I disregarded and I ended up overshooting my target temperature. Once I started trusting it and using it as a tool to help guide me rather than strictly for observation I got better about hitting target temps, I dont worry about anyone getting sick, and the food just tastes better. As far as the 4x goes the things I love about it:- 4 Sensors are so much better than 2- The range, zero communication issues through the cook chamber, and the 4x base provides bluetooth coverage across the majority of the house from my back yard. It's a dramatic improvement over the range of the original extender bases.- The battery life, the original stick already had an absurdly long battery life and the 4x just improves on it. After a 10-hour brisket smoke the app still indicated the stick had a full battery. The only con I have noticed is the shape of the 4x is a bit more "bullet like" on the tip. The original stick came to a finer point which made inserting the stick into tougher meats more difficult. On long cooks where the meat contracts it seems like the tip geometry causes the stick to work its way out exposing about a quarter inch of the stainless steel probe. This allows the temperature of the 3rd internal sensor to exceed 212 degrees which can damage the probe. The app will begin to warn you that the stick is approaching its limit, you will have to force the stick back into the meat to keep that from happening, over the course of the 10hr brisket cook I needed to reseat the stick twice, once at 4 hours and again at 7 hours. Faster cooking meats do not have this issue.I'm looking forward to adding a couple more 4x sticks to my collection before cookoff season starts back up next year.

I am seriously impressed with the meatstick 4x !With the extended range I can be sat indoors and keep and eye on my smoker in the garden! The app is very easy to use and you can also share a link to the temperature readings so friends and family can see the progress of the cook!
