I end up grabbing this shaker more than any other one I have.The octagonal shape at first didn't thrill me, but it turns out to be really helpful and comfortable to hold. With the larger-diameter round shakers, I use just that little extra bit of fingertip pressure to hold on, and I notice I don't feel that as much using this one. That's important too, because with a metal shaker I can get some great tonal variation by wrapping my hand around the body and open/closing my fingers to dampen the tone. Easy to do when the shaker is easy to grip... Those 8 minute songs got a lot easier.Another thing I like is that the beads inside seem to be pretty small (fine size). The tone is tighter sounding, and the smaller barrel size can give it some crisp movement with minimal rasp from bead backsplash. You can easily get a bit of a sloppy shaker sound, too.I've found that I can hold this vertically (like a hammer handle), and wrap my fingers around all the way, then flick the top forward to get a nice splash of beads against the side/plastic top. Another nice variation that's hard to control with my big blue Live shaker, or the small black plastic one.Overall, it fits nicely between the egg shaker and blue metal, as far as versatility.I still love the natural shaker sound, but this has me convinced I may not need to go back...
