Beautiful color photographs, and tons of mittens with charts. There are some instructions on how to knit the mittens, and read the charts, but knitting knowledge and experience with color work is assumed. I wouldn’t call it a beginner friendly book. If you are looking for detailed instructions for how to knit color work, this is not the book for that, but the beautiful mitten photos and charts are enough for knitters of any experience level to enjoy. There are some instructions for where to place the thumb, and some thumb charts. The only thing missing is a photograph of a completed mitten on the thumb side. I’m a visual learner and would have liked to see what both sides of a completed Latvian mitten should look like.

A beautifully presented book displaying the many traditional designs of Latvian mittens. There are maps of the different regions with the mittens from each, together with explanations of the various designs and patterns, colours used, styles of cuff and history. Each pattern double-page is presented with a knitted mitt on the right hand side, and the pattern on squares on the left hand side, together with a ruler showing the number of stitches at the bottom. This makes it possible to use part of a pattern if you want.

This is book is a real treasure. I have never seen knitting instructions laid out that beautifully. Superb quality of ready to go knitting charts accompanied by fantastic large life size photos. Instructions for basic construction of these mittens and hints come at the rear of the book. Nothing is left unattended. The history of the patterns is lovingly included making this a working textbook full of folk history that keeps you inspired... Regardless where you open the book to start looking and reading! This book was written and put together with passion for handcraft and tradition, but kept so practical in all its aspects that the tradition is actually the ready to be passed on, to never ever die out! Open the book with needles and yarn ready to cast on. This is a “must-have” on every knitters shelf, - excuse me did I write “shelf”? I meant knee! This is the knit sling book that should never be shelved! This is not a library item, this is a wonderfully illustrated and highly practical working text. The garments (mittens) are small, and have an easy construct. Worked with colours not only makes them warm, it makes them so highly attractive. And then of course, you dress them up with braids, patterns and colours. Just opening this book is like feel good therapy. You learn about tradition, while it draws you into becoming part of it. Captivating, seductive and addictive, the enthusiasm is oozing out of these ready to be knitted patterns, page after page! This book is aimed at passing on century old knitting skills in a format that modern and new knitters already know or can easily follow, while simultaneously it is holding them captive with the enchantment and delightful folk history of a small garment, cleverly designed to keep these precious working hands warm. You will love reading and learning, and a small item like a pair of mittens is so achievable for any beginner in stranded colourwork,or such a great buzz for an experienced knitter, who can never get enough patterns to try, to mix and match colours, to use up left-over fine sock yarn... You never get to the end of this encyclopaedic knitting book, and if you do, you certainly knit like a Latvian! I wish I could give more than five stars 🌟 ❤️!
