I needed a new soldering iron as my ancient Weller iron is several decades past its best. There is a large choice of soldering irons currently available, ranging from primitive to sophisticated, with prices to match. Having read many reviews (both customer reviews and professional ones) I narrowed down my choice to the TS100 temperature-controlled soldering iron. It is available from many sellers and has been around long enough for any problems to be known about.The iron consists of a small handle, which includes the temperature controlling electronics (with digital display and two buttons) and a detachable element and bit. (The element and bit are integrated into one unit.) This kit contains two element/bits, one with a pencil tip (suitable for printed circuit boards) and one with a broader tip with a flat on one side (suitable for tags and terminals, etc.) Other shaped element/bits are available to order separately. The iron is powered by a switch-mode power supply (included in the kit) similar to those used to power laptop computers.At first it seemed very lightweight - more like holding a pen than an iron, but once you're used to it, it is very easy to use and the lack of bulk and weight is quite an advantage. The iron warms up incredibly quickly and temperature control seems very stable.The kit also includes a small stand, which includes a tiny sponge for cleaning the tip. The stand is okay but you need to be careful not to knock the power cable of the iron as it will fling the iron off the stand all too easily. The tip cleaner is adequate but I think it's worth getting one of those metal tip cleaners (the ones that look like a ball of brass swarf).I'm very pleased with this purchase and would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone who wants a soldering iron suitable for electronic circuitry, but I'm not sure how suitable it would be for heavy electrical work.
