Jammer .

I have 3x sets of headphones I've tested with this amp; Audioquest Nighthawk, Meze 99 Neo, and Sennheiser 558. They are 25, 26, and 50 ohms impedance respectively. I've used a laptop via headphone out as well as a Pioneer DAP (XDP-100R) via headphone out and also line out. Volume wise they are more than loud enough for me. With the lowest gain setting on my DAP and closed back headphones (Meze 99 Neo's) I turn the dial up to around a third of the way to half way. With my laptop connected via headphone out (rather than line out) I get about the same place on the dial but have my laptop outputting at about a quarter to a half of its volume (if all that makes sense). The point is, that LOUD is no more than half-way on the dial - I've no idea what it sounds like after that as it wouldn't be comfortable for me anyway - so that hopefully gives you an idea of its power output. Obviously high gain headphones will get further round the dial and may need a bigger gain-boost from a DAP for example. The performance with the stock tubes is fantastic for the price. I paid £39.99. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants both a little extra 'oomph' from their device's amplification, but also a tube-warm coloured sound from their amplifier. By that I mean a smooth treble that'd not fatiguing and a rounded musical mid-range and bottom end.If the sound out of the box was naff, I'd have probably cut my losses and resold it on for a few quid less. However, it sounded great. Therefore, one of the first things I did after a few hours testing was to order some replacement tubes. At time of writing their seems to be two versions of the NS-08E, an original spec, and one that's been updated and now takes 6J3 tubes. I have the one with 6J3 tubes. There seems to be a lot of conflicting information (if you dig deep enough in forums and reviews!) but the general consensus is that some tubes that carry a different number designation will also work - and work well.So I got in a pair of 5654RT Tubes. These are equivalent to the Mullard M8100 and also the 6AK5, EF95. In theory they will all work, but your mileage may vary. What I can say for sure is that the 5654RT tubes, that supposedly work in the NS-08E have a Mullard sound signature of being both more dynamic and also smoother. The stock tubes were very good, but I personally detected a bit of treble-fatigue and graininess in the sound at higher volumes (particularly higher volumes than I would usually listen to outside of testing, so perhaps not even an issue). The 5654RT tubes do indeed work and they do indeed sonically alter the sound. They are smoother, more dynamic, and have an even larger bass presence. If you have neutral or clinical sounding headphones, this combination will likely bring a lot of depth out of your headphones. The Meze 99 Neo's don't need any bass-extension encouragement so I'd advise most people to not pair up known bass-heavy headphones in this combination if you don't want to be overwhelmed. I have never heard a pair of Beats by Dre, but I imagine the bass would just be too much for all but the most ardent bass head. That said, if you buy headphones that are studio/analytical and like that sound you might find that adding any tube amp is going to colour the sound to your disliking. If you like smooth, musical, listen-for-ages audio that you won't get bored of, this amp should be high on your list of purchases.I'd also like to mention that some people debunk the use of tubes in this amp as being a bit of a gimmick. I can confirm two things from my experience - 1) Without any tubes you get no sound at all, so they are used as part of the signal path. 2) Changing the tubes does make a sonic difference. Whether it's better or worse, subtle or night-and-day will depend on a number of factors, but the point is that there will be a difference. Therefore this amp is an accessible way of tuning your sound preferences in a tube amp setup.Anything I'd change? Maybe I'd have an on-off for the Blue LED's which I do think are a gimmick and may disconnect anyway. Also the recess for headphones is pretty unforgiving. I took a size-12 drill bit and opened up the headphone and input recesses which no doubt voids the warranty but now allows me to plug in any headphone or extension I want. Before certain extension cables wouldn't be able to lock in far enough.Hope that review helps. I'll update it regards reliability and any changes to the sound in due course if there is anything notable to report.

Recomendado!!

I like the sound of this amplifier (seems on par with a very decent Creative G6), but the tube amp has some big issues. I still use the tube amp though.I can see how this amp can be a good choice forThe worst one:The 240V -> 6V power adapter I received with the amp is both a fire and life hazard. When I tried to pull if from power strip by grabbing it (like I do with any other adapter), the top cover suddenly fell off efortlessly, exposing the loose PCB as it rested against my other hand (luckily, the low voltage side, also only the capacitor tops touched my hand). I powered down the power strip and extracted the PSU from the power strip, laughed at the way the PCB was "secured" inside the enclosure (hanging by the 240V cable) and glued the PSU back together. I'd use another PSU if 6V wasn't this hard to come by. There is not a single screw or plastic tab that held my PSU together. I'm guessing I got unlucky with this one (perhaps a bad PSU from another manufactorer), but who knows how often this happens. The rest is not that big of a deal:1. I found the instructions lacking and tubes too hard to insert into the socket. Original tubes have legs with sharper ends, but the recommended replacement tubes from GE come with quite dull contacts and are quite a tight fit. Probably I'm just too new for this stuff, but still it was not a good experience.2. There is surge during power on and power off. It's quite loud when used with lower impendance headphones (32 Ohm). Could use a power on/power off filter.3. This comes natural with tube amps, but has to be said: RF interferance can get quite severe. A USB 4G modem in particular makes a lot of noise. Also, using this amp with a smartphone is a bad idea (some RF interferance seems to go through the 3.5 plug), so the amp is not usable with smartphones in my experience, unless you want to use flight mode.Misc: The ports are real tight. Input could be on the back, it's a minor issue. Left channel has more RF interferance than right, and with low impedance headphones there is persistant white noise, but maybe because I messed up my lamp with bad installation - not a problem with higher impedance headphones, so eh.
