"Ah, push it."The Normcore Spring Loaded Tamper V4.1 looks and works just like their V.4 spring-loaded tamper. The "click" is supposed to "provide a satisfying confirmation, ensuring that you achieve the precise tamp needed for flawless espresso extraction every time." I'm not sure what "precise tamp" means, but I think it means the spring has reached the pre-set tension. I always thought spring-loaded tampers were supposed to tamp up to the pre-set tension of the springs. I haven't noticed a big difference in taste between the different springs, though. I'm not even sure they work the way I think they work. I don't think they stop you from tamping harder than the springs' pre-set tensions. I'm from the school of tamping until the coffee grounds can't be compressed anymore, so the springs don't seem to make any difference between my go-to tamper without the loaded springs. I didn't get the audible "click" with my last batch of coffee (20-gram dose, 18-22-gram basket). It seemed like there weren't as many beans in the dose as my current batch of coffee. The tamper bottomed out and didn't quite compress the grounds all the way. Does that mean I didn't reach the pre-set tension of the springs? I don't know, I really leaned into the tamps. If only this tamper had a couple more mm of travel, I wouldn't have had to increase my caffeine intake with my last batch of coffee. My go-to tamper is also a self-leveling tamper with a collar and spring, but that spring is only used to pull the leveling collar back into position. I can feel the resistance of the coffee grounds as I tamp. Not so much with these spring-loaded types of tampers. On the other hand, there was very little play between the collar and the vertical shaft of this Normcore tamper so the coffee bed is pretty level.Spring-loaded tampers are nice, but I don't think they tamp more than just a tamper with a properly fitted self-leveling collar. If you don't already have a self-leveling tamper, you might want to give this one a try. If you already have one of Normcore's V4 tamper, you don't need to upgrade.

The quality of this v4.1 click tamp from Normcore is very good. However, the click is barely noticeable and when using the 30lb spring, it feels like there is less than 30lbs of tamping force. I didn't measure it, so perhaps I'm mistaken, but it does feel like it's easier to push down even though I'm using the 30lb spring like in the v4.0 Normcore. The internal mechanism is a little different between the two versions. It's easy to change the spring, except for getting that little pin out that holds the smaller spring. I like the flat tamp face. The ones with indents get grinds stuck inside and the flavor of my espresso is the same between the two face styles. They should sell an all black version. I'm rating 4 stars because the 30lb tamp spring is not as firm as the other 30lb spring in the v4.0 tamp from Normcore.

Excellent. It feels solid in the hand, they give you extra springs if you want to adjust your tamp pressure, it has a click so you know when you've applied enough pressure. Overall this thing is lovely and I definitely would purchase it.
