I bought this reporter-style pocket notebook last year on recommendation from friends at the Fountain Pen Network. I started using a fountain pen again, after many years, and was looking for good paper that would stand up to fountain pen ink as well as my hard use. I decided to give the Leuchtturm a try and give my regular Moleskine notebooks a break. The Leuchtturm is slightly larger than the Moleskine. It isn't a lot, but the fit in a shirt pocket or the back pocket of my jeans is slightly tighter. It isn't a deal-breaker, but is something to note. This is a good notebook and the paper is very good. It holds up to use with my Parker 51 fountain pens and Noodler's Bulletproof Black ink just fine. I also use Noodler's Blue when I want contrast from my other notes. The binding is well made and the notebook lays flat when open. The back pocket also works as advertised. The cover and binding are of good quality too.One interesting item is that the pages come pre-numbered, which I didn't expect. There is also a pre-printed Table of Contents/Index at the front of the notebook that is handy. However, for a premium notebook, the pre-printed page numbers are partially clipped -- presumably an artifact of the mechanical cutting process used to produce the fine page edge. So, although I like the high-quality paper, the fit and finish leave a little to be desired. It isn't bad enough to pan the product, but it did leave me thinking that my Moleskine reporter-style notebooks are just fine for my application. If I stick with Noodler's Bulletproof Black, the lesser paper quality of the Moleskine will not be an issue. The size of the Moleskine (just slightly smaller) fits my lifestyle better too.

I recently received a to use for work. I prefer reporter-style notebooks, but the Moleskine one was really special. The bound construction, expandable pocket inside the rear cover, and especially the elastic band that keeps it closed made it very user friendly and an excellent companion for four busy days in Asia. On my return, I discovered this very similar notebook from Leuchtturm 1917 here on Amazon. This notebook is slightly less expensive than the Moleskine version, and has a few subtle differences. It is slightly longer (about half an inch), includes a three-page contents section, cover and spine labels for archiving, and subtly numbered pages. The paper is slightly off white with a greenish tinge. The lines and other printing are subtle, and look like they are in grey. Like the Moleskin, this notebook has a leatherette cover, some perforated sheets at the back, an expandable pocket inside the rear cover, and a small flyer describing the design features and telling a short story about the company. It's hard to believe this much thought can go into something like a small notebook, but it really adds to the usefulness over a typical spiral-bound job. Designed in Germany, made in Taiwan. Recommended.
