Olive Kitteridge: Elisabeth Strout

I loved this book, the writing of E. Strout is sublime. But Olive - OMG, what a horrible woman !I think in the whole book there was perhaps two times coming from her mouth (or even her thoughts !!!!) something nice. I must say, it ruined the book a little bit for me - to read about such a despicable woman like that, it makes your hair stand upright. How she treats her husband, her son and ALL the people around her... I hated her. Needless to say, I will NOT order the 2nd book "Olive again", lol !I ordered another book of Strout instead, as she is really a wonderful, admirable author.

What a beautiful story, And what a wonderful writer. Olive is complicated and not too likeable and yet you feel compassion for her. For all of the characters, I felt that I knew them. I have since bought all of Strout's works.

内容に関してです。まだ途中ですが、このピュリッツア作品は堅苦しくなくて、女性の感覚でうなずける点が随所にあり、どこの国でも同じだな、、、と感心してます。

Great writing, amazingly simple and touching stories of common people and places it is like a scrapbook of family memories.

Una serie di racconti autonomi, che hanno come elemento comune proprio il personaggio eponimo. In alcuni Olive Kitteridge, colta in momenti diversi della sua vita, è protagonista, in altri personaggio di contorno, in altri ancora semplice pretesto (è un’insegnante di matematica in pensione, e molti personaggi sono stati suoi allievi). Elizabeth Strout scrive magnificamente, affronta i temi difficili dei rapporti interpersonali, familiari, della morte e dell’invecchiamento, della solitudine, dell’amore, del tradimento e della vigliaccheria, in molti punti mi sono commossa ma né indulge in psicologismi, assolutamente assenti per fortuna, né si compiace in descrizioni crepuscolari o depresse. La sua prosa è energica come Olive, e altrettanto coraggiosa. Olive Kitteridge è uno di quei libri che ti fanno pregustare il momento in cui potrai finalmente aprirlo, e ti fa detestare quello in cui lo chiudi definitivamente.

If you like a book about the meandering journey of life this is for you. Olive is a complex but endearing character. I was surprised how I was gripped and wanted to know what happened to her. Beautifully written.
